Refit floors in Calne homes of every age
Latex screed is the trade's name for a compound mixed from two parts: a cement based powder and a latex liquid that takes the place of water. It is made for thin work over awkward but sound bases, and is usually laid just a few millimetres thick.
In Calne a kitchen or bathroom refit can turn up most of them.
Plywood overboarding comes first on timber. Bare boards flex and shrink, so latex is never laid straight onto them. Loose boards are screwed down and flooring grade plywood is fixed over the whole floor, then the latex covers its joints and screw heads.
Old quarry or ceramic tiles can stay if they are firmly bonded. Each one is tapped, hollow ones come out and the holes are filled, and the glaze is cleaned and primed before the latex goes over.
Uneven older concrete is the third case. Houses built between 1919 and 1944 are 6% of Calne's homes, and a solid floor of that age can be rough but sound. Latex smooths it, provided it is dry.
Old adhesive left after carpet or vinyl is lifted is the last. A thin, hard, well bonded layer can usually be primed and covered. Thick or soft residue comes off first, and concrete floor grinding in Calne is how that is done.
The finishes that benefit most are the thin, unforgiving ones: sheet vinyl, LVT, lino, rubber and safety flooring. Carpet gains too, wearing evenly over a smooth base.
Stone cottages, 2000s screeds and Calne industrial units
Latex is not the answer on every Calne floor. The older stone cottages around the town centre can call for a floor that breathes rather than a sealed concrete slab, and a latex skim does nothing to cure damp. In a cottage like that, the existing floor and any moisture are looked at first, and latex is only suggested if the base suits it.
Houses from the 2000s raise a different point. Where a Lansdowne Park ground floor is getting sheet vinyl or LVT, the first question is what the screed is made of. A calcium sulphate screed needs any laitance sanded away and a primer suited to it before latex goes on; a cement screed needs cleaning and its own primer.
On the Porte Marsh Industrial Estate, a unit changing use is usually refitted. A welfare room, office or washroom getting safety flooring over old tiles or patched concrete is a typical latex area.
Three warning signs mean another fix comes first: boards that spring, a floor that is damp, or a base badly out of level. Those need repair, overboarding or a new hand-laid screed. For a job a few miles west, see latex screed in Chippenham.
