Uxbridge sits on the western edge of London, about 7 miles from our Slough base. It is the heart of the London Borough of Hillingdon, with a busy town centre, a large university campus, business parks such as Stockley Park, and surrounding suburbs that range from 1930s semis in Ickenham and Hillingdon to new apartment schemes around the town centre and West Drayton.
We cover Uxbridge and Hillingdon for homeowners, builders, developers and main contractors.
Screeding for Uxbridge homes
Much of the housing around Uxbridge, Ickenham and Hillingdon was built in the 1920s and 1930s as the railway reached the area. Many of these semi-detached and detached homes have since been extended, and typical floors in houses like these include:
- Rear and wraparound extensions, usually with underfloor heating and bifold or sliding doors.
- Garage conversions into extra living space, raised and insulated to match the house.
- Whole ground floor renovations, replacing old uneven floors with a flat, modern base.
- New build houses and flats across the borough.
For heated extensions, liquid screed gives the best result, flowing fully around the pipes for an even, responsive floor. Our underfloor heating screed page explains the depths and heat-up. For smaller rooms and conversions, sand and cement screed is often the practical choice.
Flats and apartment schemes
Uxbridge and West Drayton have seen a lot of new apartment building and office to residential conversion. These projects need floors that are flat, fast to lay and good at controlling sound between flats. We lay screeds over acoustic layers with full edge isolation, and liquid screed allows whole floors of apartments to be poured efficiently. We work to the programme set by the main contractor, and we supply risk assessments and method statements before we start.
Commercial screeding in Uxbridge
The area around Uxbridge and West Drayton has major business parks, offices, retail and logistics space, with Heathrow close by. Busy commercial floors need a properly designed screed, which is where our high strength screed and commercial screeding services come in. For the airport corridor, see our page on liquid screed in Heathrow.
Extending a 1930s semi
Many 1930s houses in Uxbridge, Ickenham and Hillingdon have suspended timber ground floors, with a ventilated void underneath. When an extension with a solid screeded floor is built against one, a few details matter:
- Keep the void ventilated. Air bricks that fed the old floor void must not be blocked by the extension. Ventilation is usually carried through with ducts or sleeves.
- Match the levels. The new screed is set so the finished flooring runs level into the existing rooms.
- Separate the floors. A movement joint or edge strip at the junction lets the old timber floor and the new screed move independently.
- Protect against damp. The new floor's damp proof membrane must be continuous and linked to the damp proof course.
These are normally set out by your designer or builder, and we make sure the screed we lay fits them exactly.
