Latex screed for Devizes kitchen and bathroom refits
Homes built between 1973 and 1999 account for 24% of Devizes, and kitchens and bathrooms in houses of every age eventually reach the point where the old floor comes up. Underneath, the base is often a mix: old ceramic tiles under a vinyl, plywood laid over boards in a bathroom, a concrete screed scarred with adhesive where units once stood. A new sheet vinyl, LVT, rubber or safety floor cannot hide any of that, and even carpet shows a ridge in time.
Latex screed bridges those surfaces with one smooth skin. Its two components, a cement based powder and a latex liquid that takes the place of water, combine into a compound that holds on to dense tiles, tolerates slight movement in plywood and goes down only a few millimetres deep.
Each base needs its own preparation. Tiles must be firmly stuck, so we sound the whole floor and lift any that are hollow, then clean and key glazed faces. Timber boards are never latexed directly; flooring grade plywood is screwed over them first, with fixings close together, and the compound is spread on that. Old adhesive can stay if it is sound and thin, under a primer made for it. A calcium sulphate screed always has its laitance sanded off and is primed before latex goes on.
The service covers the whole town, including Cuckoo's Corner, Northbrook and Townsend. For thicker levelling over a sound screed, see levelling compound for Devizes floors.
Old Devizes floors where latex is the wrong answer
Latex smooths a sound floor. It does not make an unsound one sound, and several kinds of floor in Devizes need something else first.
Floors in the Georgian and Victorian houses of the listed centre are often suspended timber, or solid with no membrane beneath. A solid floor without a membrane can draw moisture up, and a cement based compound sealed under vinyl is likely to soften or blister as a result. We take a damp reading before quoting, and if the floor is wet the cause needs dealing with, with the listing in mind, before any smoothing coat. Old suspended floors that bounce need their timbers and fixings checked and the floor overboarded, otherwise latex cracks along every board.
Level is the other limit. Latex is meant for a few millimetres. A room that falls away by much more, or concrete that is cracked, hollow or breaking up, needs a repair or a new screed laid first. Our concrete floor repair service covers broken slabs, and a full rebuild in a small room is usually a hand-laid sand and cement floor in Devizes.
