Latex over tiles and plywood in Tidworth refits
A kitchen or bathroom refit can uncover a patchwork floor. There may be a run of old ceramic tiles under the units, a strip of bare concrete where a wall came out, and timber upstairs that has been patched over the years. Latex is the trade's way of turning that mixture into one smooth surface for a thin finish.
It works because of what it is made from. The powder is cement based, but instead of water it is mixed with a latex liquid, which gives it strong grip and a little flexibility. That lets it bond to surfaces plain compound struggles with, and go down at just a few millimetres.
Each base is treated differently. Tiles stay only if every one is firmly bonded; loose ones come up and the gaps are filled first. The glaze is cleaned and primed so the latex has something to key to. Concrete is swept, any old residue scraped back, and a primer suited to it applied.
Timber needs the most care. Bare floorboards are never latexed directly, because they move and the compound would crack along every joint. The boards are fixed down and overboarded with flooring grade plywood, and the latex goes over the ply, filling screw heads and joints so nothing prints through vinyl.

Damp, cracks and heated screeds in Tidworth floors
Latex is a smoothing layer, and it will not fix a fault underneath. Before we quote, three checks decide whether it is the right material.
Damp comes first. In Faberstown, where Walter Faber began building houses in the early 1900s, older homes may have solid floors that need a membrane. Latex laid over a damp floor lets moisture through to the finish, so a floor like that is rebuilt with a membrane and screed before any smoothing coat goes on. Our hand-laid sand and cement option covers that rebuild.
Cracks and hollow patches come next. Newer Tidworth houses typically have screeded floors over underfloor heating, and those may need small repairs. A crack or a cut-out section is filled and made sound through screed repairs first, or it will reappear through the latex.
The base material is the last check. A calcium sulphate screed must have its laitance sanded off and be primed with a compatible product, every time.
If any of these checks fails, we say so before pricing and set out what has to happen first, so the latex only goes onto a floor that can carry it.
