Self Levelling Screed and Floor Levelling in Tidworth

Before new LVT, vinyl, large tiles or engineered wood are fitted in Tidworth, we flatten the floor with self levelling compound. The newer houses typically have screeded floors over underfloor heating that may need levelling or small repairs before a new finish. Next door in Ludgershall, the trade units at Castledown Business Park also have floors that need preparing, levelling and repairing.

Smoothing screeded floors in newer Tidworth houses

A screed that was fine under carpet can be a problem under LVT. Thin, rigid finishes show every hollow and ridge, and large tiles rock where the floor is high. That is why newer Tidworth houses with screeded floors often need levelling when the flooring changes, even though the screed itself is sound.

BS 8204 measures flatness with a 2m straightedge. Gaps under it must not exceed 3mm at SR1, 5mm at SR2 or 10mm at SR3. Thin sheet finishes very often call for SR1. Laid at roughly 2mm to around 10mm, a self levelling compound gets most floors within those limits.

Before any compound, the floor is primed with a product chosen for its base. A calcium sulphate screed needs a compatible primer after its laitance is removed, while cement screed and concrete take different products. Where the floor is heated, the heating is turned off and the floor allowed to cool before compound goes down.

The post-war housing brings a different challenge. Semi-detached houses make up 38% of Tidworth's homes, and where one of these has been extended, the join between the original floor and the new one is often slightly out. A thin levelling coat across both makes the new flooring run through without a ridge.

If a floor is too far out, cracked or loose, compound is not the fix. Thick layers poured over a floor that is breaking up can crack and come away, so the honest answer there is a new screed. Our sand and cement screed page for Tidworth covers that route.

Trade units at Castledown Business Park, Ludgershall

Castledown Business Park sits on part of the old Army depot in Ludgershall, next door to Tidworth, and its industrial and trade units have floors that are prepared, levelled and repaired. A new tenant may want sheet vinyl in an office area, a smooth floor in a showroom or a sound base for racking.

Preparation decides the result. Old paint, adhesive or damaged concrete are removed first, and our floor preparation and shot blasting service covers that stage. Damaged concrete is fixed first through our concrete repair service, and only then does compound go down. The floor is then primed and levelled with a fast drying product, so the fit-out can follow quickly.

We do not lay resin or polished concrete finishes, but we can leave a flat, sound base ready for the contractor who does. Where a unit has an office or welfare area as well as a workshop floor, each part can be levelled to suit its own finish.

FAQs

Floor Levelling in Tidworth: your questions

Can levelling compound go over a heated screed floor?

It can, provided the screed underneath is solid and gets a suitable primer. The heating must be turned off and the floor cool before the compound is laid, then brought back up gradually afterwards. Calcium sulphate screed also needs its laitance taking off beforehand. Newer Tidworth houses with heated screed floors may need this before LVT goes down.

How thick can self levelling compound be laid?

A typical range is about 2mm to around 10mm, though certain products can be laid thicker. Using compound to make up a floor that is well out of level risks it cracking and losing its bond. When that is the situation, we will say so after seeing the floor, because a new screed would serve you better.

What flatness do I need for large format tiles?

Large tiles need a flat base or they rock and crack, so a floor close to SR1, no more than 3mm under a 2m straightedge, is a sensible target. Before quoting we measure your floor, then use compound on any areas that fall short. Your tile supplier's guidance on flatness is the final word.
