Latex Screed Contractors in Salisbury

We lay latex screed across Salisbury, from Fisherton and St Paul's to Wyndham Park and the outer suburbs. It is a two part compound, cement based powder mixed with a latex liquid, spread a few millimetres thick over a sound but awkward base. It earns its place where a kitchen, bathroom or flat refit uncovers plywood overboarding, firmly stuck old tiles or a patched slab that a thin finish would show up.

Latex over boards and slabs in Salisbury flats

A flat above ground level can sit on timber joists and boards or on a concrete slab, and either may have been patched by earlier owners. Height is often tight too, because doors and thresholds limit how much a new floor can add. A latex layer a few millimetres thick works within that.

Where the floor is timber, latex never goes straight onto the boards. They are screwed down, and flooring grade plywood is fixed over them at close centres; the latex then goes onto the plywood. Split or badly cupped boards are replaced before the plywood goes on, because the overboard is only as stiff as what is under it. Sheet vinyl, lino and safety flooring in a kitchen or bathroom then sit on a smooth, joint free surface instead of showing every plywood seam.

On concrete, latex smooths out patches, old trowel marks and joints so a thin finish such as sheet vinyl, lino or rubber lies flat. Old adhesive that is thin and firmly bonded can sometimes be primed and covered. Thick or soft residue comes off first, which is part of grinding the slab.

A latex smoothing coat is a different job from general levelling across a wide screed that is out of flat. That broader work, with its flatness classes and compound depths, is on the Salisbury levelling page.

Old tiles in Salisbury terraces and suburban semis

Renovating the period terraces around the centre and extending the inter-war and post-war semis of the outer suburbs both tend to involve a new kitchen or bathroom floor. Semis are 29% of the city's homes. Under the last covering there may be quarry tiles, ceramic tiles or a film of old adhesive.

Firmly bonded tiles can stay. Each one is tapped, hollow tiles are lifted and the gaps made good, the glaze is cleaned and the right primer applied, then latex covers the grout lines and edges. Loose or cracked tiles cannot simply be bridged.

Damp is another matter. Old solid floors in the period terraces often have no membrane, and latex will not stop moisture coming through. A floor that reads damp needs that dealt with first, which in an older terrace usually means digging out and relaying rather than smoothing over.

Latex also cannot rescue a floor that moves or one that is badly out of level. Springy boards need fixing and overboarding; a deep dip needs a screed. A calcium sulphate screed must have its laitance sanded off and be primed before latex goes on. The same thin smoothing work is offered for latex screed in Amesbury.

FAQs

Latex Screed in Salisbury: your questions

Is latex screed the same as self levelling compound?

It is one kind. Latex screed is a two part levelling compound whose powder is mixed with a latex liquid instead of water, giving a tougher, slightly more flexible thin layer. That suits plywood overboarding and old tiles. Single part compounds mixed with water are used on plain screed and concrete. In a Salisbury flat, the base decides which one goes down.

Can latex screed be laid over quarry tiles?

Yes, if every tile is firmly stuck. Any that sound hollow are lifted and the gaps filled, then the surface is cleaned and given a primer suited to glazed or quarry tile. A few millimetres of latex then hides the grout lines. If the tiles sit on an old solid floor with no membrane and the floor reads damp, that has to be solved first.

Does latex screed add much height to a floor?

Very little. It is usually laid a few millimetres thick, which is why it suits Salisbury flats where doors and thresholds leave little room. If plywood overboarding goes down first, its thickness adds to the total. We measure the finished height at each doorway before work starts, so the new flooring meets the next room neatly.
