Stripping old adhesive in The Maltings and Old George Mall
When a shop changes hands, the outgoing tenant's floor rarely suits the next one. Lift carpet tiles and there is a grid of tackifier; lift vinyl and there is hard black adhesive; lift ceramic tiles and there are ribs of old tile adhesive. A new covering cannot be laid over any of these with confidence, and compound will not bond reliably to them either.
Diamond grinding cuts all of that away. The heads take the surface down in thin passes until clean concrete or screed shows, and in the same operation they remove ridges and lips, such as where an old partition or counter base stood. The result is an open, slightly textured surface that a primer can soak into.
In a unit in The Maltings or Old George Mall that is changing hands, grinding normally comes first in the sequence: grind, repair any damaged areas, prime, then level. Weak or broken patches go to screed repairs before any compound, and flatness and compound depth are handled under Salisbury floor levelling.
A refit on the small business park along the north edge of Old Sarum Airfield can call for the same stripping back before the new floor goes down. If a resin floor is planned, another contractor lays it and we prepare the surface to the texture they ask for. We do not lay resin or polished concrete ourselves.
Silica dust and limits in Salisbury buildings
Grinding concrete, screed or tiles produces respirable crystalline silica, a fine dust that is dangerous to breathe. Our grinders run only with dust extraction attached, and the area is sheeted off so neighbouring shops, offices or rooms stay clean. In a shopping centre unit that also means agreeing working hours and access in advance.
At home the jobs are smaller but similar. Detached houses are 22% of Salisbury's homes, and wherever a garage is being converted its slab may carry paint, oil or sealer. A suburban extension can leave a lip where new concrete meets old. Lifting old vinyl can expose adhesive. Grinding takes each of these back to sound concrete.
Know the limits before booking. Grinding removes local high spots, not slopes: a floor that falls across a whole room has its high points ground and then compound or screed laid to bring it flat. Grinding too deep can also leave a screed thinner than its minimum, so the depth is checked first.
We are a screeding contractor. We grind as part of our own preparation work and do not sell or hire grinders or diamond tooling. For very large areas or thick coatings, shot blasting is the usual alternative, covered under floor preparation.
