Stripping old finishes from Wimborne Minster shop floors
A shop that becomes a cafe, or a pub that refits its bar, rarely keeps the floor it inherited. Under the old carpet or vinyl there is usually adhesive, sometimes floor paint, and often a slab with trowel marks or patched areas standing proud. New LVT, sheet flooring or a levelling compound will not bond reliably to any of that.
Diamond grinding removes it. The machine carries rotating heads with diamond segments that shave the surface of the slab or screed off a fine layer at a time, so adhesive, paint and thin coatings come off and raised areas are brought down. The result is a clean, sound, slightly open surface that primer can soak into. From there the floor might take compound, a new screed, flooring, or a resin system laid by another firm.
Resin and polished concrete are outside what we install, and our grinders and tooling are not for sale or hire. We arrive with our own machines and do the work.
Timing matters on a refit with an opening date. Grinding, priming and levelling can be planned as one sequence, so the Wimborne Minster floor levelling follows straight on and the shopfitter is not left waiting. Before any of that, we confirm the floor really is concrete or screed, because some older premises in the town centre have different floors underneath. Where large areas or thick coatings are involved, shot blasting and other preparation may be quicker than grinding.
Extension joins and garages in Colehill and Leigh Park
Colehill and the Leigh Park area have post-war family estates that suit extensions with insulated screeds, and the point where the extension meets the existing house is rarely perfect. A small raised lip, or a run of laitance on the newer floor, can be ground off so the finish passes over the join without a ridge. Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up 26% of the town, and an old garage slab of any age often needs paint and oil removing before a conversion.
Grinding takes off what is high. It cannot fill a dip or correct a floor that slopes over a large area, so in that case we grind the high spots and then level or screed. We also keep an eye on screed thickness, because grinding too far can leave it below its minimum depth. Cracked or broken concrete goes through our concrete floor repair service before anything is laid over it.
Dust is controlled at the source. Concrete and screed contain silica, and the fine dust grinding throws up can reach deep into the lungs, so every machine runs with extraction connected, sheet off doorways and keep dust out of lived-in rooms. Homes in nearby Bournemouth can book the same preparation.
