Underfloor Heating Screed in Wimborne Minster

Whether it is pumped or hand-laid, we put the screed over wet underfloor heating in Wimborne Minster homes. A heated screed is the normal choice in the new houses at Leigh Road, Wimborne Chase and Rivers Edge, and 19% of the town's homes date from 2015 or later. Extensions on older homes can add heated floors too. Our part is checking the layers beneath, pouring or laying to the correct depth over the pipes, and leaving you a schedule for warming the floor up. Your heating engineer, not K & B, puts the pipes in.

Heated floors at Wimborne Chase, Rivers Edge and Leigh Road

A new home built around underfloor heating relies on the screed to spread the heat. The pipes are clipped to insulation, and the screed poured over them becomes the radiator for the room.

Getting the cover right is the first job. In a Wimborne Chase or Rivers Edge house, a pumped layer needs at least 25mm clear above the pipes, which brings the total to 45 to 50mm. Hand-laid screed asks for about 45mm over them. Skimp on that and cracks can trace the line of each pipe.

Poured screed seals round each pipe with nothing hollow left behind, and that is why new heated ground floors at places like Rivers Edge so often get it. Plans for these homes may quote a calcium sulphate grade, which our Wimborne Minster anhydrite page unpacks, and the layer by layer depth guide shows the build-up.

Before the pour we check that the insulation is flat, the membrane is lapped, the edge strip is fitted to every wall and the heating installer has pressure tested the pipes. Missing boards, sheeting or perimeter strip? We can bring those.

On published 2026 UK figures, underfloor heating liquid screed costs £20 to £35 per m². The price for a particular floor depends on area, depth and how much of the build-up is included. For a new home or a plot, a site layout and the heating drawings are enough for us to price it.

Adding underfloor heating to older Colehill homes

The post-war family homes in Colehill and around Leigh Park suit extensions with insulated screeds, and an extension is a natural point to add underfloor heating. What makes it tricky is height, because the extension floor has to meet the old rooms with no step.

We start from the finished floor level of the rooms you are keeping and work down through the flooring, screed, pipes, insulation and membrane. Pumped screed sits thinner over the pipes than sand and cement, handy when a Colehill extension is short of height.

Older houses in the centre are harder. Fitting heating under a solid floor there usually means digging it out first, and in the conservation area any change to an early floor has to respect what the rules allow.

Go slowly the first time the heating runs. Calcium sulphate can normally be warmed after a week or so, from 7 days, but sand and cement waits for 21 days at the very least. The temperature should rise in stages over several days. We hand over written guidance so the heating engineer can commission the system properly, and so nobody turns the thermostat up early to hurry the flooring along. Heated floors in Bournemouth are screeded by us too.

FAQs

Underfloor Heating Screed in Wimborne Minster: your questions

How much screed goes over underfloor heating pipes?

Pumped screed: at least 25mm clear over the top, so 45 to 50mm overall. Traditional sand and cement: roughly 45mm of cover. That cover gives the floor its strength and spreads heat evenly. On a Wimborne Minster extension we check it against the existing floor height before the pour.

Can I tile straight onto a heated screed?

Not straight away. First the screed must be dry enough for whatever limit your tile adhesive maker sets, and a calcium sulphate floor also needs its top skin sanded away and a suitable primer on. Commissioning the heating gradually helps drying. We test the moisture and tell you when it is ready.

Who installs the underfloor heating pipes?

Your heating engineer or the plumber on the build. K & B screeds over pipes but never fits them. Once those pipes have passed their pressure test, we look over the boards, membrane and perimeter strip, add any that are missing and then screed over the top. That keeps responsibility clear on a new home or extension in Wimborne Minster.
