Screed for Underfloor Heating in New Milton

Underfloor heating works only as well as the screed wrapped around it. In New Milton we lay that screed, liquid or sand and cement, over pipework your heating engineer has fitted and pressure tested; installing pipes is not something we do. Here, heating tends to come with an extension or conversion, not a new house: only 10% of local homes date from 2000 to 2014, so most heated floors go into older buildings.

Heated extensions matched to New Milton slab levels

Put a rear or side extension on a 1950s to 1990s detached house in New Milton and one thing cannot move: the concrete slab in the original house. The heated extension floor has to finish level with it, so insulation, pipes and screed must all fit into a depth fixed before any of them arrive.

Start from the pipe crowns and work up. A pumped screed needs 25mm above them as a minimum, normally adding up to 45 to 50mm of screed. Trowelled cement screed wants nearer 45mm of cover, so that build-up ends taller. When the old slab caps the height of the extension floor, the slimmer liquid choice makes space for more insulation, and that insulation decides whether warmth goes up into the room or down into the ground.

Complete encapsulation is the second argument for a flowing screed. It closes around each pipe with no voids, so the floor heats evenly and responds well to the thermostat. Hand-laid screed can equal it if packed carefully along every run.

When a ground floor is opened up, the heating often carries on from the extension into the old room. If that means lifting the original floor, look at the base first: the cracked and hollow screeds common in houses this age are better replaced than buried. Relaying is covered on our New Milton sand and cement page, and the pumped pour on our liquid screed page.

Commissioning heated floors in New Milton homes

With the screed down, the heating sits idle for a while. A week (7 days) is normally enough before a calcium sulphate floor is warmed; cement screed needs three weeks, 21 days, as a minimum. Commissioning is gradual: begin with a low flow temperature and turn it up in steps over several days. We give you the schedule on paper and your heating engineer follows it.

Going straight to full heat is among the most frequent reasons heated screeds crack and debond. Handled gently, those same pipes are what gets an anhydrite floor ready for flooring soonest.

A converted garage starts out cold, and a heated screed over good insulation is a sensible way to make it a usable room. The same build-up rules apply, and the floor still finishes level with the house.

Pumping screed over heating loops is published for 2026 at between £20 and £35 per square metre. How long the floor then takes to dry is explained in screed drying times, and we offer the same service five miles away in Lymington.

FAQs

Underfloor Heating Screed in New Milton: your questions

Can underfloor heating go under screed in a New Milton garage conversion?

Yes. The garage floor is built up with a membrane, insulation, the heating pipes and a screed finished flush with the house. Pipe cover is 25mm minimum with pumped screed and about 45mm with sand and cement. The pipework is fitted by your heating engineer, and once it has passed its pressure test we lay the screed around it.

How do I commission underfloor heating after a new screed?

Hold off at first: an anhydrite floor needs around 7 days, a cement one 21 days or more. After that, run the water barely warm and lift the setting a little at a time, spread across several days. Your New Milton installer gets our written schedule to follow. The point is to warm the screed gently, not to force it dry in a hurry.

Is liquid or sand and cement screed better over underfloor heating?

For heated floors most people choose liquid, as it wraps the pipes with no voids, can go down thinner and heats up sooner. Sand and cement still makes sense where the room may get wet, a heated shower room for instance, or where a cement base is required. Tell us about the room and its finish and we will recommend one.
