Sound bases first in New Milton's post-war homes
Latex screed is a levelling compound in two parts. A cement based powder is stirred into a latex liquid where an ordinary product would use water, and the result is suited to awkward bases such as ply, old tiles and firm adhesive. It goes down thin, a few millimetres, so it refines a surface; it cannot rescue one.
That distinction counts in New Milton. Only 3% of the town's homes were built since 2015, so most floors being refitted have decades of wear behind them, and original screeds in houses of the 1950s to 1990s can show three faults. Hollow areas ring dull when tapped, because the screed has parted from its base. Dusting surfaces leave grey powder on your palm. Cracks open where the floor has shrunk or moved. Lay latex over any of these and it inherits the fault: it cracks with the screed, lifts with a hollow patch or bonds to dust and not to the floor.
So the work comes in order. Hollow sections are cut out and relaid, cracks are assessed and powdery surfaces are brushed and vacuumed until solid screed shows; our screed repairs service covers that part. Only then does latex go on, over a primer chosen for the base.
Some floors are simply past it. A room that is badly out of level, springy underfoot or damp needs a repair, overboarding or a new screed before any thin compound. If what you need is general levelling and not latex on an awkward base, see floor levelling across New Milton, which compares compound with screed.
Refit floors in Old Milton, Ashley, Bashley and New Milton
Whether the house is in Old Milton, Ashley, Bashley, Wootton or close to the station, a refit tends to meet one of three bases.
Timber floors. An upstairs bathroom sits on joists and boards. Boards alone move too much for latex, so loose ones are screwed down and flooring grade plywood is fixed over them before the compound. That build-up suits sheet vinyl and LVT in a bathroom where every seam has to stay tight.
Old tiles. A kitchen may hide quarry or ceramic tiles under later flooring. If they are all firmly bonded, latex can cover them once loose ones are lifted and the surface is cleaned and primed for a smooth base.
Old adhesive. Thin, firm residue can stay under latex; soft or thick layers come off first, and diamond grinding in New Milton is how we take them up.
Flats are a large part of the town's housing. In a flat kitchen or bathroom, sheet vinyl, lino or rubber shows the smallest ridge, so the base must be smooth, and any calcium sulphate screed has its laitance sanded off and is primed before latex goes on. Latex work is also available in Christchurch.
