Relaying hollow and dusting screeds in New Milton
Tap a screed and hear a hollow note, and it has either come away from its base or was never compacted properly. If it coats everything in grey dust, its surface is weak. Cracks running across a room point to shrinkage, settlement or a screed laid too thin. All three show up in the screeds of New Milton houses built from the 1950s through the 1990s, and 33% of the town's homes were built between 1945 and 1972 on their own.
How much comes out depends on how far the fault spreads. A hollow corner can be cut out and relaid in sand and cement, bonded to what lies beneath and finished flush with the rest. If the whole room is breaking up, all the screed goes and a new floor is laid.
For mending of this kind, a trowelled cement mix is the obvious material. It can be mixed a little at a time, laid by hand to meet the old levels exactly, and it bonds firmly to prepared concrete. Bonded to concrete it can be 25 to 40mm thick; floating on fresh insulation in a house, about 65mm.
Damaged spots that stop short of a full relay come under our screed repair service. If the surface is sound and only uneven, New Milton floor levelling is faster than any new screed. Every depth is set out in the guide to screed thickness.
Garage conversions on New Milton's detached houses
Garage floors sit below the house and were never built to live on. Converting one means a damp proof membrane, insulation, and then a screed that ends exactly level with the house at the connecting door. Conversions are a routine job on New Milton's detached houses, and hand-laid sand and cement fits them: the floor is small, a pump would be overkill, and the levels can be set by hand with a straightedge. The layers are explained in our garage conversion floor guide.
Showers and wet rooms leave no choice: cement it is. Being cement based it tolerates water, which calcium sulphate does not, and the fall to the drain can be shaped in the screed.
Hand-laying costs you time. At 65mm thick, allow one day a millimetre up to 40mm and a slower crawl after that; most floor coverings will be waiting months rather than weeks. A quicker drying mix helps where the programme is tight. Price-wise, the 2026 published band for the standard mix runs from £18 up to £25 a metre square, with faster drying blends from £20 up to £28.
