Open plan remodels in New Milton's detached houses
Turning kitchen, dining room and new extension into one room leaves a large area to cover and normally two old floor heights to reconcile, a common puzzle in the town's post-war detached houses. In New Milton's detached houses of the 1950s to the 1990s, the screed gets matched to the existing concrete slab, so every level is measured back from that line.
Three things make a pumped screed easier here. One: it goes in to a set datum and spreads itself flat, comfortably meeting SR1 or SR2, so a two metre straightedge will show a gap of 3mm or 5mm at worst. Two: it is slim. Floating in a house it can start at roughly 35mm, where sand and cement needs some 65mm, leaving space for insulation without lifting the new floor above the old. Three: shrinkage is minimal, so even a wide open floor needs few joints.
That flatness shows its worth when the floor covering goes on. Open rooms usually get one material throughout, tile, LVT or engineered wood, and a flat base with few joints lets no ridges telegraph through.
Pumped screed is made with one of two binders, gypsum-based calcium sulphate or cement. Pumping is identical; drying, surface preparation and where each may be used differ, and the calcium sulphate side is on our New Milton anhydrite page. For the two methods compared directly, see pumped versus hand-laid screed.
Pumping into New Milton flats and back extensions
The pump stands on the road or the drive while the hose takes screed into the room. In a block of flats it goes through the front entrance and up the stairs, so nothing gets carried and communal areas are protected along the way. Let us know which floor the flat is on and whether the block restricts access or working hours.
With a house, it comes down to where the pump can go and how the hose reaches the back. A side path, a garage or a hall all work if kept clear. Flag any parking restrictions in your enquiry.
On a New Milton pour day the room should already have foam strip skirting each wall, polythene across the insulation boards taped at every seam, and a barrier at each door opening. We walk the room and check it all before the hose goes in; the kit itself is described under screed pumping.
Light footsteps at 48 hours tell you nothing about moisture, though. Flooring goes on only when a test reading falls within the maker's limit, and that takes roughly one day per millimetre up to 40mm, then more. We pump screed in nearby Christchurch as well.
