Pumped liquid screed for Verwood's detached house extensions
When a detached house from the 1970s, 1980s or 1990s is extended, the new floor is often large and open, joining a kitchen, dining area and family room. That is where liquid screed does its job well.
Because it flows, it fills the whole area in one pour with no compaction, and it settles to a surface regularity of SR1 or SR2 without hand finishing. There is so little shrinkage that even a long kitchen-diner gets by with very few movement joints. For a house floor floating on insulation boards, we would not go much under 35mm.
It also suits heated floors. Nothing is left hollow around the heating loops, which lets warmth travel up evenly and reach the room quicker. If the extension will have underfloor heating, our underfloor heating screed page for Verwood covers pipe cover and commissioning.
Pumped mixes for a Verwood extension are bound either with calcium sulphate or with cement. Which suits your Verwood extension depends on the room, whether it is heated and the floor you have chosen.
Then there is the meeting point with the original rooms. We take the finished floor level from the rooms you already have and work back to the screed depth, so the step between old and new is as small as possible. Before choosing, have a look at our side by side of liquid and sand and cement.
Setting up the pump on a Verwood driveway
On most detached houses the mixer and pump can stand on the drive. From there the hose runs through a garage, a side gate or the front door to the room, and the route is covered to protect floors and door frames. Where a drive is blocked by a skip or a builder's materials, we need to know in advance.
Purpose-built flats are 8% of Verwood's homes. For an upstairs flat, the hose climbs the stairwell or goes in through a first floor window.
Before the pour, insulation and edge strip should be in place and the room closed to draughts. The screed is poured and dappled in a single visit. Leave it closed up for the first day or two, then open the windows to let the moisture out. Because each millimetre of the first 40mm takes about a day to dry, hold off booking whoever lays your flooring until our date is set.
For larger pours, or where a builder has laid the build-up and just needs the screed pumped in, see our screed pumping service. The same liquid screed service runs in nearby Ringwood.
