Underfloor Heating Screed in Verwood

In Verwood, underfloor heating usually arrives with a renovation. Owners of the town's 1970s to 1990s detached houses often swap old floors for insulated ones with wet heating, or add a heated extension. Our job is the layer over those pipes, pumped or hand-laid, set at the correct depth and followed by a planned first warm-up. Pipes, manifold and controls come from your heating engineer, and we pick up from there.

Swapping old floors for heated ones in Verwood

Replacing an old floor with an insulated, heated one is a common renovation in Verwood's detached houses. The old screed or chipboard is lifted, the base dug down where needed, and a new build-up of membrane, insulation, pipes and screed goes in.

Floor height is the constraint. Doors, stairs and the rooms you are not changing all fix the finished level. This is where a pumped mix earns its place: 25mm or more over the pipes, 45 to 50mm overall, compared with roughly 45mm over the pipes alone if you use sand and cement. That difference can decide whether the old base has to be dug deeper.

How well the pipes are wrapped matters just as much. Poured screed closes in round each run with nothing hollow left, and the heat comes through the surface evenly. Has your heating designer written a calcium sulphate grade on the plans? Our Verwood anhydrite page decodes it.

Before the pour we check the insulation is flat, the membrane lapped, the edge strip round every wall and the pipes pressure tested. Anything missing from that list, whether boards, sheeting or perimeter strip, we can bring with us. Our floor preparation service covers the base work below.

Pumped screed over heating pipes is quoted nationally at £20 to £35 a square metre for 2026. Where your Verwood job lands in that range turns on floor size, thickness and how many of the layers we provide.

Pipe cover and first heat-up in Verwood extensions

Of Verwood's homes, 18% have been built since 2000, so in this town a heated floor is more likely to arrive with an extension or renovation on an older house. An extension brings its own floor, and underfloor heating makes sense there because the new room is open and well insulated.

Where the extension joins the original Verwood house, the two floors have to finish flush. We start from the finished height of the house and work down through the flooring, screed, insulation and membrane.

Switching on too eagerly is how a lot of heated floors get spoiled. Calcium sulphate can normally be warmed once 7 days have passed. Sand and cement in a Verwood extension sits unheated for 21 days, longer if the readings say so. In both cases the temperature should go up in small steps over several days, not straight to full. We give written guidance so the heating engineer can commission the system gradually, and so the homeowner knows not to turn the thermostat up in the meantime.

FAQs

Underfloor Heating Screed in Verwood: your questions

Will underfloor heating raise the floor in a 1980s Verwood house?

It can, unless the old floor is taken out first. Insulation, pipes and screed together need a certain depth, so we usually dig out enough of the old base to keep the finished floor at its current height. Choosing the pumped mix claws back a little height, since it sits thinner over the pipes than sand and cement.

Can the underfloor heating be used to dry the screed faster?

Yes, once the screed is ready. Calcium sulphate floors can generally have the heating run to speed drying from around day 7, while sand and cement must wait until 21 days have passed. The temperature must be raised gradually. Heating a young screed too hard and too soon can cause cracking.

Which screed makes underfloor heating warm up quicker?

A liquid screed usually gives the faster response. It is laid thinner over the pipes and wraps them fully with no air pockets, so heat reaches the surface sooner and more evenly. Sand and cement still works well over heating, but needs more cover and a longer wait before commissioning.
