Matching screed to Salisbury's old and new homes
Census 2021 counted 47,690 people in the Salisbury built-up area, living in homes from many different periods. More than a fifth of those homes, 22%, went up before 1919, and the period terraces near the centre often still sit on solid floors with no damp proof membrane. Renovating one means digging the floor out, laying insulation and a membrane and building the floor back up; in narrow rooms a sand and cement floor packed by hand is usually the sensible way.
Out in the suburbs, inter-war and post-war semis are regularly extended. If the extension opens into a kitchen, pumped liquid screed for wide floors settles flat and is ready to walk on in 24 to 48 hours.
The homes going up at Longhedge and Old Sarum are newer, and built with underfloor heating. Pipe cover and the switch-on date are explained on our Salisbury heated floor page; if a plot's paperwork names a calcium sulphate grade, the anhydrite page deals with sanding and moisture checks.
Plenty of flats in the city centre want a thin levelling coat or an acoustic floor build-up and not a whole new screed. The levelling side is explained under levelling floors in Salisbury.
Whatever age the building is, three questions come first: what the floor is made of now, what finish is going on it, and what height it must finish at.

Access and timing across Salisbury
Screed goes in partway through a project. Before the pour, the room should be closed to the weather, the wet plaster finished, with any heating pipes already pressure tested. Then the floor needs drying time, which varies with depth and screed type, so fix the flooring fitter's date after ours.
Getting in can differ a lot from one part of Salisbury to another. With a pumped screed, the mixer and pump must stop within hose reach of the room. A house with a drive rarely causes trouble. Around the centre, where parking may be restricted and frontages are narrow, mention permits, loading rules or awkward access when you request a quote. Sand and cement laid by hand just needs a clear barrow route and room to mix.
Commercial floors run to their own timetable. A small business park lines the north edge of Old Sarum Airfield, and the retail units in The Maltings and Old George Mall need levelling and screed repairs when shops change hands. Where a floor is damaged before new flooring goes in, see repairs to existing screed.
