Choosing a screed for a Ferndown house or bungalow
Census 2021 recorded 13,267 people in the Ferndown built-up area. Until 1986 the parish was called Hampreston, and it takes in Stapehill, Trickett's Cross, Ameysford and Longham as well as the centre. In the mid 1950s Ferndown was still described as a village with a gravel road and a scattering of shops, and much of today's town went up over the following 20 to 30 years on former heathland. That history shows in the housing, much of which dates from those post war decades.
For the floors, that gives three common starting points.
An extension or garden room. A new insulated floor with open space is a natural fit for pumped liquid screed, which is flat, dense and walkable in 24 to 48 hours.
A renovation. Replacing a cold, uninsulated floor means digging out, adding insulation and a membrane, and laying a new screed, often with heating pipes built in during the same works. The depths and heat-up are explained on the underfloor heating screed page for Ferndown.
Converting the garage, or a compact room like a wet room. For those, sand and cement placed by hand is the answer, since it can be raised to the height of the house floor or sloped to a drain.
Some solid floors from the post war building boom have cracked or settled. Where one of those is still solid, just bumpy, a levelling compound pour might be all it takes.

Planning a pour in Ferndown, from Ameysford to Longham
On a detached property the pump and mixer can usually stand on the drive or at the kerb, with a short hose run to the room. Tell us if the route passes through a side gate, a conservatory or a finished room, so it can be protected, whether the house is in Ameysford, Longham, Stapehill or the Grange Estate.
When we can pour is decided by how far the builder has got. Windows and doors should be fitted, the roof on and wet plastering finished. If heating pipes are going in, the engineer should have pressure tested them first. After the pour, allow drying time before flooring and book the fitter to follow the screed, not the other way round.
Ferndown also has a large commercial side. The Ferndown Industrial Estate, Uddens Trading Estate and East Dorset Trade Park cover about 150 acres between them, with employers including Farrow & Ball. Factory, trade counter and warehouse floors there often need repairs, grinding or high strength screeds; our commercial screeding service covers that side of the work.
