Grinding where Devizes extensions meet older floors
Every extension on a post-war Devizes house creates a join. The new slab or screed is laid to the drawings, the old floor is wherever it settled decades ago, and the two seldom meet perfectly. A lip of a few millimetres along the line is enough to show through LVT or crack a large format tile.
Grinding is how we take that lip away. A machine with spinning diamond segments cuts the surface down in thin passes, so the high side of the join, along with any trowel ridges or local humps nearby, can be brought down under control. A thin levelling coat then ties the two floors into one plane.
The same process cleans a surface. Laitance on a new screed, floor paint in a utility room and thin coatings on an old slab all stop primers and compounds bonding well. Grinding removes them and leaves an open, sound face.
Know what grinding cannot do. It is for local high points, not for a floor that falls away across a whole room. If the old floor slopes, we take off the peaks and then lay compound or screed to bring the room true. Screed depth is checked before any cutting too, since over-grinding can take a screed below the thickness it needs.
The work covers the whole town, from Southbroom, Roundway and Nursteed to Wick, Hartmoor and Jump Farm. For thin levelling after grinding, see Devizes floor levelling; for a full depth floor in a new room, liquid screed for a Devizes extension.
Old adhesive, garages and silica dust in Devizes homes
Many of the Devizes houses built between 2000 and 2014 are reaching the stage of new tiles or vinyl, and lifting the original coverings leaves carpet glue, vinyl adhesive and ridges of tile adhesive behind. Those residues can stop a compound bonding. Scraping takes the loose part; grinding takes off what is left and opens the surface up for primer.
Garage conversions are another job for the grinder. A garage slab may be stained with oil, painted or rough, and it has to be clean before insulation and screed raise it to the floor level of the house. Our garage floor screed guide shows that build-up.
Dust is the part people worry about, and rightly. Concrete, screed and old tiles contain silica, and grinding them makes respirable crystalline silica dust. Extraction is connected to the grinder every time, and doorways and openings to the next rooms are closed off first.
To be clear about the service: grinding is a preparation stage done by our own crew. We do not sell or hire grinders or diamond tooling, and we do not lay resin or polished concrete. Where the area is very large or the coating thick, shot blasting may suit better, as explained under our floor preparation work.
