Concrete Floor Grinding Contractors in Trowbridge

Our own team grinds concrete and screed floors across Trowbridge to remove high spots, bay edges, laitance, old adhesive and paint, leaving a clean surface for compound, screed or new flooring. We are a contractor, so we neither hire out grinders nor lay resin or polished concrete. In Trowbridge that means refits of warehouse and trade counter units on Canal Road Industrial Estate and White Horse Business Park, plus extension and garage floors on the town's estates.

Grinding unit floors at White Horse Business Park

Two Trowbridge estates hold most of the warehouse and trade counter floors that grinding suits. Canal Road Industrial Estate is the main trade and manufacturing estate, north of the centre, and White Horse Business Park is south of it beside the A363. When a warehouse or trade counter on either is refitted, the slab usually needs taking back before anything new goes on.

A grinder works by spinning diamond segments against the slab, cutting the surface back a fraction at a time. It flattens the ridges and trowel lines left from the original pour, brings down lips where bays meet at a joint, and strips laitance, adhesive, line paint and thin coatings until the concrete beneath is clean and sound. That gives a primer or new layer something solid to grip.

What follows is set by the new use. Trade counters and offices are often primed and levelled straight after, and a heavily worn warehouse floor may need a hard wearing high strength screed on top. Where the client has a resin contractor lined up, we leave the slab ready for them.

It helps to know the limit early. Grinding removes local high spots, but it will not straighten a floor that slopes or dips across a bay. Those floors get their high spots ground and the low areas built up. For very large areas or thick old coatings, shot blasting or scarifying through our preparation and shot blasting service may be quicker.

Lifted floors and extensions on Paxcroft Mead and Studley Green

Paxcroft Mead and Studley Green are typical of the later housing in Trowbridge, where kitchen and garden room extensions are common and floors are lifted to add insulation. Both jobs can leave concrete that needs grinding.

Where an extension slab meets the original floor, the join is rarely perfect, and a lip of a few millimetres will show through LVT or crack a large tile. Grinding cuts it back so the two floors meet cleanly. After old carpet or vinyl comes up, the adhesive left on the concrete is ground off so new compound or flooring bonds to the slab rather than to old glue.

Garage conversions bring paint, sealer and patched repairs, which come off before insulation and screed go down. If the floor then needs smoothing, latex screed over the ground concrete gives thin finishes a flat base.

Dust needs controlling in a home. Concrete and screed contain silica, and grinding releases dust fine enough to breathe deep into the lungs, so our machines always run with extraction attached and adjoining rooms are sheeted off. We also grind only what is needed, because taking too much off a screed can leave it thinner than its minimum depth.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Trowbridge: your questions

Can grinding remove old floor paint from a Trowbridge garage?

Yes. Floor paint and thin sealers are exactly what diamond grinding removes well, along with oil-soaked surface layers and rough patches. Once the slab is back to clean concrete it can be insulated and screeded for a conversion, or primed and levelled. Our guide to converting a garage floor explains the layers that usually follow.

Will grinding make an uneven unit floor on Canal Road flat?

Only where the problem is high spots, ridges or lips between bays. A floor that sags or slopes across a large area cannot be ground flat without removing far too much. In that case we grind the high points, then bring the low areas up with compound or a new screed, and price both stages together.

Do you polish concrete floors in Trowbridge?

No. Our grinding prepares a floor for the next layer; it does not produce a polished or decorative finish, and we do not lay resin. We also do not sell or hire grinders. For a polished or resin floor, we can grind and prepare the slab for the specialist who carries out that finish.
