Self Levelling Screed and Floor Levelling in Trowbridge

Across Trowbridge we use self levelling compound to give engineered wood, LVT, vinyl and large tiles a flat floor to sit on. Locally, the commercial estates stand out: Canal Road Industrial Estate and White Horse Business Park have warehouse and trade counter units whose floors suit repairs and grinding when they are refitted. In homes, the join between an older floor and a new extension often needs levelling. If compound will not do and a new screed is the real answer, we tell you straight.

Unit refits at Canal Road and White Horse Business Park

Canal Road Industrial Estate, about a mile north of the town centre, is Trowbridge's main trade and manufacturing estate, home to occupiers such as Wickes, Apetito and Howdens. Two miles south, on the A363, is White Horse Business Park. A unit on either estate that is being refitted or taken over by a new occupier often needs its floor put right before the finish goes on.

Preparation comes first. Old adhesives, coatings and loose concrete are removed, and our concrete floor grinding service takes a slab back to a sound surface. Damaged areas are repaired. Next comes a primer chosen for that base, followed by the levelling compound.

For offices, showrooms and trade counters, the target is usually SR1 or SR2. BS 8204 sets the limits under a 2m straightedge: 3mm for SR1, 5mm for SR2 and 10mm for SR3. Fast drying compounds keep the fit-out on programme, so the floor layer can follow quickly.

Warehouse floors that take heavy traffic are a different matter. Compound is a thin layer and is not designed to replace a worn wearing surface. Where the floor needs rebuilding, a high strength screed for trade units is the better route. We do not lay resin or polished concrete, but we can prepare a flat base ready for the contractor who does.

Joining old and new floors in Trowbridge homes

Inside homes, levelling is needed most often where an extension meets the original house floor. Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up 22% of Trowbridge's housing, and an extension added to a house of that age may not line up exactly with the original floor. A thin coat of self levelling compound across both makes a seamless base for LVT or large tiles.

Most compound goes down between about 2mm and around 10mm, with some products made for deeper fills. Sheet vinyl and other thin finishes frequently ask for SR1. Each base needs the right primer: cement screed, calcium sulphate and concrete each take a different product.

Compound cannot rescue a floor that is cracked, loose or well off level. Poured thick over a floor that is failing, it can crack and lose its bond. There, our advice will be a new screed, and relaying with sand and cement sets out the choices. Where an extension has its own underfloor heating, the heating is switched off and the floor allowed to cool before compound goes down. For premises in Frome, see floor levelling in Frome.

FAQs

Floor Levelling in Trowbridge: your questions

Can levelling compound go over old quarry tiles?

It can, where the quarry tiles are stuck fast and the floor under them is sound and dry. The surface is cleaned and a primer suited to the tiles is applied before the compound. If tiles are loose or the floor has no damp proof membrane, as some older Trowbridge floors do not, the floor may need rebuilding instead.

How long does self levelling compound take before flooring goes on?

Fast drying compounds are made to keep a programme moving, so the wait is far shorter than for a new screed. How long exactly comes down to which product it is, how thick it goes on and the conditions in the room. The product sheet sets the wait, and we follow it before the floor layer arrives.

Is a trade counter floor on Canal Road too damaged to level?

It depends on the damage. Cracks, holes and worn patches can usually be repaired and the floor then levelled. Where the slab itself is breaking up, or the wearing surface has gone over a large area, a new screed or concrete repair is the right answer. We assess the floor before giving a fixed price.
