Flattening old and new floors in Warminster semis
Modern thin floorings give away every dip. LVT and sheet vinyl take the shape of whatever is under them, and large tiles rock or crack on an uneven base. BS 8204 measures flatness under a 2m straightedge: SR1 permits a 3mm gap, SR2 5mm and SR3 10mm. Many thin sheet finishes ask for SR1.
When a post-war Warminster house has been extended, the old floor and the new one seldom match exactly. The original screed may have sunk a little or been patched, and the new floor, though flat, ends up a few millimetres higher. Compound brings both into one plane, so the new covering carries on through without a ridge where the old back wall stood. That step is easy to miss under dust sheets and obvious once LVT is down, so we check the join with a straightedge before choosing a depth.
Get the primer wrong and the compound may not stick. Dusty cement screed, smooth power floated concrete and calcium sulphate each want their own primer.
Compound has its limits. Pour it thick to hide a failed base and it can crack and come away. Where a floor is broken, hollow or badly out of level, it is better relaid in sand and cement screed, or the damaged patch cut out and mended through our screed repairs service.
Refits at Crusader Park and Warminster Business Park
On the western edge of Warminster, Crusader Park is a Principal Employment Area sitting beside Warminster Business Park and its light industrial and warehouse units. A change of tenant or an office refit there often means sorting out the floor before new carpet tiles, vinyl or LVT are laid.
Whatever the last occupier left behind, whether adhesive, paint or other residue, usually has to be removed first. Grinding opens up a clean surface for the primer to grip, and our concrete floor grinding service takes care of that step. A fast drying compound then gets the floor as flat as the new covering requires, so the fitters are not left waiting and the refit keeps to programme.
Compound is there to finish a floor, not to hold it up. Under heavy racking or forklift traffic, a warehouse needs a sound slab or screed beneath, and compound will not carry that load if the base is breaking down.
The West Warminster Urban Extension includes about 5.6 hectares of employment land, so more units are likely to arrive. For refits about 8 miles away, there is floor levelling in Trowbridge.
