Where pumped screed works in Warminster homes
Open floors are where a self-levelling screed earns its keep. Plenty of Warminster's post-war semis have been extended at the back into one long kitchen and family room. Poured as a liquid, the mix spreads across that whole area in one go, settles flat and gets to SR1 or SR2 regularity without fuss. It hardly shrinks, so it needs far fewer joints than a hand-laid floor, which large format tiles appreciate.
Converted garages suit it too. With insulation and a membrane in place, the pumped screed lifts the new floor to the level of the house, and nobody has to wheel heavy barrows of mix through the hall.
Flats make up 12% of Warminster's housing. Upstairs, the hose just follows the stairwell, whereas hauling sand and cement up there would be slow and back-breaking.
A pumped floor can also be shallower. In a house, floating liquid screed begins at roughly 35mm, against roughly 65mm for sand and cement, which helps where the new surface must line up with an existing threshold. You can get liquid screed as calcium sulphate or as a cement based mix, and the choice rests on the room and the flooring. If you are weighing up a pump against a hand-laid floor, our guide to pumped versus hand-laid screed lays out the differences. Westbury is about 4 miles away, and we pour liquid screed in Westbury too.
Getting the hose into a Warminster house
The pump and mixer are parked outside, and the hose goes in through whichever door is closest to the room. A detached house with a drive makes that easy. For a house on a terraced street, the pump might have to sit on the road for a few hours, so mention parking, yellow lines or a shared side passage when asking for a price.
Before any screed flows, the room has to be prepared: edge strip round every wall, a membrane laid over the insulation with its joints taped, and doorways dammed to hold the screed in. We go over each of these on the day, and if you would rather hand the build-up to us, our insulation and membranes service can supply and fit it.
Being able to stand on the floor does not mean it is dry. You can walk across it within 48 hours or so, yet most floor coverings must wait until the screed is under the flooring maker's moisture limit. As a rough rule, count one day for each millimetre up to 40mm and longer for anything deeper; our article on how long screed takes to dry explains why.
