Liquid Screed in Melksham

Melksham's newer housing is the main reason pumped screed comes up here: 22% of homes in the town date from 2000 onwards, and their floors, along with extensions on older semis, are where liquid screed makes the most sense. Across Melksham we pump it into open-plan kitchens, extensions and whole ground floors. It levels itself as it leaves the hose, so even a large room is done in one visit and takes careful foot traffic after 24 to 48 hours.

Where pumped screed suits Melksham floors

Pumped screed is at its most useful on floors that are broad, open and need to finish flat. Around Melksham, three situations fit that description.

One is a post-war semi near the town centre with a new rear extension, especially when the extension opens into the kitchen and you want a single floor across both. The hose fills the whole area on one visit, the screed settles level without trowelling, and it needs far less jointing than a hand-laid floor would.

Another is the newer stock at Bowerhill and Hunter's Meadow, where floors are designed around underfloor heating. A flowing screed wraps each pipe with no air gaps, which is why heated floors like these suit it; pipe cover and the first warm-up are dealt with on our Melksham heated floor page.

The last is simply a large floor, such as a knocked-through ground floor in one of the bigger detached houses, or a whole level being relaid at once.

Depth helps too. As a floating floor on insulation in a home, liquid needs only about 35mm where sand and cement needs 65mm, a real advantage when the finished level is tight against doors. It also reaches SR1 or SR2 flatness without much trouble, so the tiler or LVT fitter has less preparation to do.

There are two types, one with a calcium sulphate base and one with a cement base, and the cement type goes in where a floor could get wet. Once we have seen the room, we will say which. For a job a short way off, see pumped screed in Trowbridge, under five miles away.

Getting the hose into Melksham houses and flats

The pump and mixer stay outside on the street or driveway, and the screed travels to the room along a hose. Where a house has a drive, that is easy. On a Melksham terrace the hose might need to come through the hallway or down a side passage, and that route is covered and checked before pumping starts. Tight parking out front is worth mentioning when you request a quote, so the vehicles can be planned in.

Flats are no barrier. They make up 12% of homes in Melksham, and the hose can be taken up the stairs to flats on the first and second floors, provided the stairwell is clear and the managing agent has agreed to the access.

People tend to underestimate drying. You can walk on a liquid floor within a couple of days, yet it will not be ready for flooring for a good while longer. Over the first 40mm, reckon on roughly a day of drying per millimetre; any depth beyond that dries more slowly still. Our screed drying time guide covers how the floor is tested before anything is laid on it, and pumped versus hand-laid screed compares the two main choices.

FAQs

Liquid Screed in Melksham: your questions

How thick should liquid screed be in a Melksham extension?

A floating liquid floor laid on insulation in a home normally starts at around 35mm. If underfloor heating pipes run through it, the screed above them must be 25mm or more, which usually takes the whole floor to 45 to 50mm. Where you end up depends on how thick the insulation is and the level the extension has to match in the original house.

Is liquid screed dearer than sand and cement in Melksham?

A little, per square metre. UK prices published for 2026 put liquid at £24 to £31 per m² and sand and cement at £18 to £25. Across a big open extension, the faster pour and thinner floor can win back a fair part of that difference. For one small room on its own, sand and cement normally comes out cheaper.

When can I walk on a liquid screed floor?

Normally after 24 to 48 hours, gently and in soft soled shoes. For the first couple of days leave doors and windows shut so draughts do not dry the top too quickly, and then open up to ventilate. Being able to walk on it comes long before it is dry enough for a floor covering, which takes far longer and needs confirming with a test.
