Liquid Screed in Chippenham

Knocked-through ground floors, back extensions and new rooms in Chippenham are where we put pumped liquid screed to work. Cepen Park and Pewsham have a large stock of 1980s and 1990s housing, where many ground floors are being opened up and refitted now. A pumped screed suits those wide rooms because it covers the whole floor in one visit and settles level without hand compaction.

Why pumped screed suits Cepen Park and Pewsham floors

Houses on the Cepen Park and Pewsham estates went up in the 1980s and 1990s, and they have reached the age where owners knock through, extend at the back or swap a conservatory for a proper room. Each of those jobs leaves a large, open floor to fill, and that is where liquid screed earns its keep.

The screed turns up ready mixed and runny, and a hose carries it from the lorry to wherever the floor is. It flows to the edges, around any pipes and into corners, and a quick dappling pass knocks out trapped air. The result is a dense floor, with surface regularity to SR1 or SR2 readily achievable, which matters if the finish is large tiles or LVT.

Depth is lower than a traditional screed. Over insulation in a home, liquid screed can float at about 35mm where sand and cement would need 65mm, and that saving often makes it easier to bring a Pewsham or Cepen Park extension up to the level of the old floor. It hardly shrinks, which keeps the joints in a long knocked-through kitchen-diner down to a few.

There are two families of liquid screed, one made with calcium sulphate and one made with cement. The specification or the use of the room decides which, and both are pumped the same way.

Semi-detached homes make up 32% of Chippenham's housing. Where a semi has a driveway or side access close to the extension, the hose run stays short.

Pump access from Chippenham streets and upper floors

Nothing heavy comes indoors: the pump sits by the lorry and only the hose enters the house. On a typical estate house the lorry parks on the drive or the road outside, and the line runs through a side gate or the garage to the extension. Older terraces near the town centre are tighter: there may be no frontage, parking restrictions or a shared passage, so we need to know that at the quoting stage.

Hoses can also be run up stairs to an upper floor or a flat, which avoids carrying material through the building by hand. For more on how the equipment is set up, see our screed pumping service.

You can normally step onto a fresh liquid floor after 24 to 48 hours, but being able to walk on it does not mean it is dry. Allow roughly one day for each millimetre of the first 40mm, longer beyond that depth, and expect a moisture reading before tiles, LVT or wood are laid. We cover the maths in our screed drying explainer.

If the new room carries underfloor heating, see our Chippenham underfloor heating screed page for pipe cover and commissioning. Still choosing between materials? Our side by side of pumped and hand-laid screed is a good place to start.

FAQs

Liquid Screed in Chippenham: your questions

How thick does liquid screed need to be in a Chippenham extension?

Over insulation in a home, we would not float a liquid floor much under about 35mm. Where pipes run underneath, keep at least 25mm of screed over them, which normally adds up to a 45 to 50mm floor. When an extension has to line up with an older floor, the thinner build-up of liquid screed often makes the levels easier to match.

What does liquid screed cost per m² for a Chippenham home?

In 2026 UK pricing, a plain liquid floor costs £24 to £31 per m², or £20 to £35 per m² laid over underfloor heating. Area, depth and pump access set where a job falls in those ranges. Once we have your plans or room sizes, a fixed price follows in writing within 24 hours.

Can liquid screed go into an upstairs flat in Chippenham?

It can, provided the upper floor was built to carry a screed. The pump hose runs up the stairwell or through a window, so nothing is carried by hand, and the screed is poured over insulation with an edge strip around the walls. Flats make up 14% of Chippenham's homes, so upper floor access is worth raising when you ask for a price.
