Liquid Screed in Calne

We pump liquid screed into Calne extensions, new ground floors and flats, laying the whole area in one visit with a floor you can walk on within 24 to 48 hours. Many of the houses in Calne are post-war semis and terraces, and they lend themselves to single storey extensions, and those wide new floors over insulation are what a self-levelling screed suits.

Single storey extensions across Calne

Almost a third of Calne's homes, 32%, are semis, and the post-war ones in particular, along with the terraces, are well suited to a single storey addition. An extension of this kind often becomes a larger kitchen and family room joined to the original house, which creates exactly the kind of wide, open floor where a pumped screed is at its most useful.

The method is simple to describe. It leaves the plant already mixed, travels down a hose into the extension and runs out over the insulation, finding its way round any heating loops and right into the corners. A dappling bar is then worked through it to knock out trapped air, and the screed finds its own level. That normally leaves an SR1 or SR2 finish, flat enough for tiles and LVT.

It is also shallower than a traditional floor. On domestic insulation it can be floated from roughly 35mm, where a traditional mix needs nearer 65mm. That margin often makes the difference when the extension floor has to meet the existing kitchen at the doorway without a step.

Because it shrinks very little, liquid screed needs far fewer joints across a big floor, and it flows fully around heating pipes with no voids. Both calcium sulphate and cement based liquid screeds are available; the calcium sulphate kind, with its grades and testing, has its own page on anhydrite flow screed in Calne.

Price pulls the other way, and our pumped versus hand-laid screed guide weighs the two against each other.

Pumping into Calne homes and flats

Mixer and pump do their work from outside, with the hose carried in to wherever the floor is. A driveway makes that easy. On a terrace with parked cars, the lorry may need to stand in the road, so tell us about any restrictions, narrow lanes or shared paths when asking for a price.

Flats are where pumping saves the most effort. Carrying sand and cement up a stairwell bag by bag is slow, while a hose simply follows the stairs to the right floor.

Have the room set up by the time the lorry pulls in, with foam strip round the walls, polythene over the insulation and its seams taped, and a stop across each doorway to hold the screed in. Once it is poured, keep windows and doors shut for the first day or two so it cures evenly.

A walkable floor is not a dry one. Before the flooring, count on a day per millimetre through the first 40mm and a slower rate below that. Chippenham, about 4.9 miles away, has its own page on pumped screed in Chippenham.

FAQs

Liquid Screed in Calne: your questions

How soon can I walk on liquid screed in my Calne extension?

Most people can step across it carefully after 24 to 48 hours. Ladders, piles of materials and anything heavy should stay off for a while after that. Being able to cross it is a long way from being ready for a floor covering, which waits until a moisture reading says the screed has dried enough.

Is liquid screed worth it for a small room?

Often not. The pump and lorry carry a fixed cost, and pump hire alone runs at £300 to £600 per day on published 2026 figures. On a small cloakroom or utility, hand-laid sand and cement is usually cheaper. Liquid screed pays back on larger, open floors.

Can liquid screed be laid over an existing concrete floor?

Yes, either bonded to a prepared slab or unbonded over a membrane, depending on the depth available and the condition of the concrete. An old floor needs checking for damp and soundness first. Concrete that is solid but just a few millimetres off level might need nothing more than levelling compound.
