Grinding factory and warehouse floors at Bowerhill
Bowerhill's industrial area, some of it laid out where RAF Melksham once stood, holds the kind of floors where grinding earns its keep. A warehouse or production slab collects years of wear: lips where one bay meets the next, old line paint, patches of coating, and adhesive where offices or mezzanines were once fitted. Before a new finish, a repair or a fresh screed goes down, that surface has to be brought back to clean, sound concrete.
Grinding uses rotating diamond heads that cut the top of the slab away in thin passes. Each pass shaves down high spots and trowel marks and breaks through laitance, the weak skin left on the surface of concrete and screed. Floor paint and thin coatings come off the same way. What remains is an open, textured face that primers, compounds and bonded screeds can grip.
We grind as a contractor, as one stage in preparing a floor. We do not sell or hire grinders or diamond tooling, and we do not lay resin or polished concrete. If a resin system is going down afterwards, the resin contractor tells us the surface they need and the slab is prepared to suit.
For very large floors or thick coatings, shot blasting or scarifying can be quicker, and our floor preparation service covers both. Where a slab has cracked or has broken arrises and needs more than a clean surface, the job moves on to repairing the concrete first.
Dust, depth and limits on Melksham floors
Grinding concrete, screed or tiles releases respirable crystalline silica, a fine dust that is harmful to breathe. We grind only with an extractor connected to the machine, seal doorways with sheeting and keep dust out of rooms still in use. In a house where the family is at home, that planning is part of the price.
Domestic jobs are smaller. A garage being turned into a room may have oil stains or old paint on its slab. An extension on one of the post-war semis nearer the centre can leave a ridge where its new concrete meets the original. Lifting carpet or vinyl in an older room can uncover stubborn black adhesive. Grinding takes each of these back to bare concrete.
Grinding has limits, though. It removes local high spots; it does not level a floor that slopes or dips across a whole room. Then the high points are ground and compound or screed brings the floor flat, as described under levelling floors in Melksham. Taking too much off a screed can also leave it thinner than its minimum depth, so the depth is checked before cutting.
A Melksham floor that needs a thin smoothing coat after grinding, perhaps before sheet vinyl, may suit latex over the ground concrete.
