Slab preparation on Westbury's three industrial estates
The largest of the three, West Wilts Trading Estate, runs to 174 acres; Northacre Industrial Park lies off Storridge Road, and Brook Lane Industrial Estate is the third. Floors in dairy, distribution and manufacturing buildings take forklift wheels, pallets and spills for years, and by the time a unit is re-let the surface is often scarred, painted or patched.
Grinding is how that surface is taken back. Rotating diamond heads cut away the top in thin passes, removing worn paint, faded line markings, thin coatings, hardened adhesive and any laitance on a screed. It also takes down the ridges and lips where neighbouring concrete bays meet, which otherwise catch pallet truck wheels and show through new finishes.
What follows grinding may be someone else's work or ours. A resin contractor may come in next, and we leave the slab clean and open for them; resin and polished concrete are not finishes we lay. In the offices and welfare areas of a unit, the next layer is often compound and vinyl, which we can do. Where a wearing surface needs replacing in the warehouse itself, see our commercial screed for warehouse floors.
One honest caveat. Grinding fixes high spots, not a floor that sags across a whole bay. Grinding far enough to remove a wide dip would strip away too much, and a screed could end up below its minimum depth. For large areas or heavy coatings, shot blasting or scarifying may be quicker, and both sit within our shot blasting and other floor preparation.
Grinding garages and extension floors in Westbury homes
Detached houses are 30% of Westbury's homes, and a house of that type may well have its own garage. When a garage is being turned into a room, its slab often carries years of oil, paint or a worn floor coating, and all of it has to come off before a membrane, insulation and screed go on. Our layers for a garage conversion floor sets out the layers that follow.
Extensions bring a different job. Where a new slab meets the original floor there is often a small step or ridge along the old wall line. Grinding that down, then levelling across the join with our floor levelling service in Westbury, lets LVT or tiles run straight through.
Floors that have had carpet or vinyl lifted are the third case. Old bitumen or hard adhesive can stay behind in patches, and soft or flaking residue cannot safely be covered over.
Every one of these jobs makes dust, and the dust matters. Concrete, screed and tile all contain silica, and grinding them releases fine particles that are harmful to breathe. Our machines run only with extraction connected. We seal doorways, cover vents and protect the rooms either side, then vacuum before handing back. Grinding is done by us as part of the floor work: the grinders and diamond tooling stay with our team and are never sold or hired out. We also offer concrete grinding in Chippenham, about 14 miles away.
