Underfloor Heating Screed in Warminster

Over wet underfloor heating in Warminster, we lay either liquid or sand and cement screed at the correct depth over the pipes, and give you clear instructions for the first heat-up. Your heating engineer installs the pipes, and our pour follows once they have passed a pressure test. The figure that matters here: 31% of homes went up between 1973 and 1999, and houses of that age lend themselves to a heated rear extension, or to a retrofit while an old floor is being replaced.

Pipe cover and floor height in Warminster extensions

A heated floor is only as good as the screed around the pipes. Every pipe has to be fully surrounded with no air gaps, and there must be enough depth on top for strength and an even spread of heat.

With liquid screed, that means 25mm over the pipes as a minimum, usually 45 to 50mm in total. Hand-laid screed wants about 45mm on top of the pipes, which makes the whole floor deeper. On a new extension that hardly matters, since the build-up is drawn up from day one. Lift an existing floor to add heating, though, and height gets tight, and a thinner pumped liquid screed for heated floors is often what lets the floor finish under the existing door thresholds.

In Warminster, 29% of homes are detached, and a bigger plot tends to mean a bigger project, such as a large kitchen extension or garden room heated wall to wall. There, a flowing screed has the extra benefit of covering a wide area with few joints.

What sits under the pipes matters just as much. Without insulation, the heat drains down into the ground rather than up into the room. On the day we look over the insulation, the membrane and the strip around the walls before any screed goes in, and our insulation and membranes work can supply them if needed.

Switching the heating on in a Warminster home

Turning the system up too early is the usual way heated screeds go wrong. A calcium sulphate screed will normally take low heat from about 7 days. Give hand-laid cement screed at least 21 days. Either way, the temperature climbs gradually over several days, holds there, and only then goes to its normal setting. You get that schedule on paper, which means your plumber and your household are both working from one plan.

Across the new streets planned for the West Warminster Urban Extension, builders will be pricing liquid screed over underfloor heating plot after plot, with the heating part of the design from the outset. How a controlled heat-up fits with drying is covered in our guide to screed drying times.

Whatever covering goes on top sets how flat the finished surface must be, and tiling, vinyl planks and timber each have their own tolerance. As a guide, published 2026 prices for liquid screed over heating pipes sit between £20 and £35 a square metre. Around 6 miles away, the same work is on offer as underfloor heating screed in Frome.

FAQs

Underfloor Heating Screed in Warminster: your questions

Can underfloor heating be added to an older Warminster house?

Often, if the ground floor is due for replacement anyway. Out comes the old floor, insulation goes down, your heating engineer lays the pipework, and then we pour on top. Floor height is the constraint: liquid screed needs a minimum of 25mm above the pipes, which keeps the build-up shallower than sand and cement would.

When can I turn underfloor heating on after screeding?

A calcium sulphate screed can usually take gentle heat once it is about 7 days old. With sand and cement, hold off for at least 21 days. In both cases, bring the temperature up slowly across several days instead of going straight to full heat, because a sudden jump can crack the screed and spoil the floor.

Do you install underfloor heating pipes as well as the screed?

No, we leave the pipes to others. The pipework is your heating engineer's job, including the pressure test, and the screed on top is ours. We still look over what is underneath, from insulation and membrane to the strip round the walls, before we pour, and anything missing we can supply and fit.
