Lifting estate floors for heating in Trowbridge
On estate homes in Trowbridge, a heated floor is often added as part of a bigger job. The old screed is lifted, insulation boards go down, the heating engineer lays the pipes, and a new screed is poured on top. The challenge is height. Insulation, pipes and screed all take depth, and the finished floor still has to meet doors, thresholds and the kitchen units.
Cover over the pipes is fixed by the screed type. With a liquid screed, there should be at least 25mm above the pipes, making the total around 45 to 50mm. Sand and cement calls for roughly 45mm above them, which adds to the overall depth. Liquid is the more usual pick over heating. It wraps fully round every pipe without trapping air, so rooms heat up faster and the system runs more efficiently.
In Trowbridge, 32% of homes are semi-detached. Where a semi's ground floor is opened up into one heated space at the same time as the floor is lifted, a single continuous pour can cover the whole area.
The pipes themselves are outside our work. Your heating engineer installs them and pressure tests everything ahead of our pour. We then check the edge strip, membrane and insulation, and can provide any of them the job needs. If the old floor has to be broken out completely, our sand and cement screed page for Trowbridge covers the rebuild. For fuller depth figures, see our guide to screed thickness.
Commissioning heated floors in Trowbridge extensions
A freshly poured heated floor cannot be warmed straight away. Calcium sulphate normally allows the system on from about 7 days. For sand and cement it is 21 days or more. The heat is then raised gradually, following the system supplier's commissioning schedule, not switched straight to full.
Garden rooms need particular care. They often have large areas of glass, so the room can warm up quickly on a sunny day while the screed is still drying. Keeping the room ventilated and the heating schedule steady helps avoid cracking. Blinds or temporary covering on the glass can also stop one end of the floor drying far faster than the other.
Write the commissioning dates down and share them with whoever runs the heating, especially if the house is occupied and someone may be tempted to turn the thermostat up early on a cold evening.
Heated floors also affect the flooring choice. Tiles and LVT both work over heating, but the floor must be flat and dry first. If the specification names a calcium sulphate product, read about anhydrite screed and laitance before booking the floor layer. For homes in Westbury, see underfloor heating screed in Westbury.
