From Newtown terraces to Paxcroft Mead: matching the screed
Trowbridge was known as the Manchester of the West by 1820, with more than 20 woollen cloth factories, and its older streets include the Victorian houses of Newtown. Their ground floors are often old suspended timber, or else solid ones put down with no damp proof membrane beneath. When they are renovated, the floor is usually broken out, a membrane and insulation go in, and a hand-laid sand and cement screed for Newtown houses is laid before the new flooring.
The later estates are a different job altogether. Growth spilled into Hilperton parish, where the Paxcroft Mead estate gained its own primary school in 2001, and Studley Green is typical of the same era. Homes like these get kitchen and garden room extensions, floors lifted to add insulation, and new heated floors. A wide extension floor suits pumped liquid screed in Trowbridge, and where pipes are going in, the underfloor heating screed page explains depth and heat-up.
Census 2021 counted 43,753 people in the Trowbridge built-up area, living in homes of every age. A floor that is sound but uneven rarely needs a new screed. Usually a thin skim of levelling compound ahead of new flooring will sort it.
We cover the whole of Trowbridge, including Hilperton Marsh, Longfield, Lower Studley, Upper Studley, Trowle Common, Woolley, Ham Green and Lower Westwood.

Planning a Trowbridge pour and the commercial estates
In the order of works, the screed comes partway through. Before it goes down, the room needs a roof, windows and doors, the wet plastering should be finished, and heating pipes laid and pressure tested. Afterwards, the floor needs drying time before anything is fitted on top, so book the floor layer and kitchen fitter around the screed date rather than the other way round.
A pumped pour needs a place for the pump and mixer near the front door. If parking is restricted, the house has no drive, or access is through a rear lane, tell us when you ask for a price. Postcodes here include BA14 and BA15.
The town's commercial floors work to a different pattern. Canal Road Industrial Estate, about a mile north of the centre, is the main trade and manufacturing estate, with occupiers such as Wickes, Apetito and Howdens. White Horse Business Park sits 2 miles south of the centre on the A363. Warehouse and trade counter units on both suit high strength screed, floor repairs and grinding when a unit is refitted.
