Levelling under new kitchens in Royal Wootton Bassett
Kitchen refits tend to expose a floor's faults. Once the old units are out, you find bare patches of screed, old adhesive and ridges where tiles used to be. Large format tiles and LVT need a flat, clean base, and a floor that passed under vinyl and cupboards may not be good enough now.
BS 8204 checks flatness with a 2m straightedge. Under it, the gap can be up to 3mm for SR1, 5mm for SR2 and 10mm for SR3. Many thin sheet finishes need SR1, so a floor at SR2 can still want a thin levelling coat before LVT.
Self levelling compound goes on thin, typically 2mm at the shallow end and around 10mm at the deep end, with some products made for thicker sections. Before that, the base gets a clean and a primer suited to what it is, whether that is concrete, sand and cement, calcium sulphate or a sound existing floor.
The join between house and extension is the other frequent problem. Even a well built extension can end a few millimetres away from the original floor, and one continuous finish across the two will show it. A thin coat over the join removes the step.
If the base is cracked or loose, or needs more depth than compound can provide, a new screed is the correct answer. Laid thick over a failing floor, compound tends to crack and come loose. For floors like that, see sand and cement floors in Royal Wootton Bassett, or use our latex smoothing screed for thin smoothing coats.
Flats and shop refits in Royal Wootton Bassett
Flats make up 13% of homes in the town, and refurbishing one often means taking up the old flooring and putting LVT or engineered wood through every room. Under a flat there is usually a screed or concrete slab, which has to be sound, clean and flat before any compound goes on.
Shops and offices follow the same steps on a larger scale. A change of tenant means the old carpet tiles or vinyl come up, leaving adhesive and uneven patches behind. Those are taken off, the floor is primed, and a fast drying compound keeps the fit-out moving so the new flooring can follow shortly after. Grinding and adhesive removal come under our floor preparation work.
On commercial jobs the sequence matters. Compound goes down once the strip-out is done and before counters, partitions or shelving are fixed, giving one continuous level floor. Where the base is damaged and not merely uneven, it may need repairing before any compound. The same levelling is available for shop or office refits in Swindon, about five miles away.
