Shop and restaurant refits on Castle Street and East Street
Farnham's commercial floors are mainly in the town centre, from the shops and restaurants of Castle Street, West Street and East Street to the Farnham Maltings arts venue on Bridge Square. When a unit in one of these older buildings is refitted, the existing base is rarely ready for a new finish. Old tiles and adhesive, patched concrete and the edges of previous fit-outs all leave ridges and dips. Laying new flooring straight over them soon shows every one of those faults, and it wears unevenly where the surface rocks.
Levelling compound turns that into a flat base. A 2m straightedge shows how far out the floor is, and BS 8204 sets the limits beneath it: 3mm for SR1, 5mm for SR2 and 10mm for SR3. Commercial sheet vinyl and other thin coverings often call for SR1.
The base is prepared first, which may mean removing old adhesive or grinding high spots; our concrete floor grinding service covers that. A primer matched to that base goes on next, followed by the compound, normally between about 2mm and 10mm deep.
With a quick drying product, the shopfitters' floor layer can come in soon after and the refit keeps to time. Where a floor is cracked, hollow or broken, it needs screed repairs before compound goes on. Larger commercial areas needing a new screed are covered on our commercial screeding page.
Levelling Farnham homes, old and new
At home, the usual reason to level is a join. When a new extension screed meets the floor of a Georgian, Victorian or post-war house, the two surfaces rarely match exactly, and LVT or large tiles laid across the line will show it. A compound feathered across the join, and across the old floor, brings them into one plane.
Period finishes need a good base too. Where an old solid floor has been kept but is uneven, a thin compound over a suitable primer can make it ready for new tiles or timber without digging it out.
Compound is not always the answer. Poured thick to cover up a floor that really wants replacing, compound can crack and come loose. If the old floor is breaking up, damp or too far out of level, we tell you and quote for a fresh hand-laid screed instead.
Priming matters on every base. Each base takes its own primer: porous cement screed, sanded calcium sulphate, dense concrete and old ceramic tiles all differ, and a mismatch is one of the usual reasons compound lifts. Postcodes here include GU9 and GU10.
