Floor Levelling and Self Levelling Screed in Camberley

Before new vinyl, LVT, big format tiles or engineered wood goes down in a Camberley home or shop, we pour self levelling compound to give it a flat base. Two situations tend to call for it in a town like Camberley: retail and office refits in places such as The Square and Watchmoor Park, and homes where an extension or garage conversion meets an older floor. Both need the base primed properly and an honest view on whether compound alone is enough.

Refits at The Square and Watchmoor Park

Shop and office refits in Camberley lean on compound more than any other job. The Square shopping centre dates from the late 1980s, and a shop refit in a centre of that age often finds an old floor that is not flat enough for the new finish. The Atrium adds shops, a cinema and a bowling alley to the town centre, while Watchmoor Park is an established business park and Albany Park sits just over the boundary in Frimley. Retail refits and office upgrades in buildings like these tend to need levelling, repairs and fast drying products, because the unit has to reopen on time.

Flatness is judged against BS 8204, with a 2m straightedge laid across the floor. Under it, SR1 permits 3mm of gap, SR2 permits 5mm and SR3 permits 10mm. SR1 is the class many thin sheet finishes demand, so an office floor that looked fine under old carpet tiles can fail once LVT or vinyl sheet is specified.

Most compound goes on between roughly 2mm and 10mm, with certain products able to build thicker. First the floor is cleaned, then primed to match what lies underneath: concrete, sand and cement, calcium sulphate or the remains of old adhesive. Pick the wrong primer and the compound tends to come away.

Where a slab is worn or contaminated, concrete floor grinding opens the surface first. Larger fit-outs may need a full commercial screeding package, and for units at Albany Park see floor levelling in Frimley.

Joining extensions to older Camberley floors

In Camberley houses the trouble is usually a lip or a slope where the extension meets the original room. With 38% of Camberley homes built between 1945 and 1972, plenty of extensions join an original floor that has had decades to settle. Garage conversions raise the same issue at the hallway door. Compound can blend the two and fill shallow hollows, letting one run of flooring cross from old to new with no hump.

Compound has limits. It smooths a floor rather than holding one up, and piling it thick onto a base that wants replacing can end in cracks and loss of bond. A floor that sounds hollow, breaks up or sits further out than compound can correct should come up, and relaying it in sand and cement is normally the way forward.

When the correction is small, a skim of a few millimetres does the job quickly, and fast drying products keep the flooring fitter on programme rather than waiting weeks. We will see the floor first and tell you straight which route it needs.

FAQs

Floor Levelling in Camberley: your questions

How flat does a floor need to be for large format tiles?

Large tiles show every hump, and lipping between them is hard to avoid on an uneven base. Most tile and adhesive makers want a flat surface close to SR1 or SR2, meaning no gap over 3mm or 5mm under a 2m straightedge. An older floor often needs a thin layer of compound to reach that.

Can levelling compound go over an existing floor?

Often, if the existing surface is sound and firmly bonded. Compound suits screed, concrete and many older floors, provided loose material, weak adhesive and dust are removed first. The primer is chosen for that base. If the old surface is breaking up, it has to come off, or the new layer will fail with it.

How long after levelling can new flooring go down?

Much sooner than after a new screed. Fast drying compounds are chosen so the flooring fitter can follow on quickly, and the exact time is on the product sheet and depends on depth and room conditions. For a Camberley shop or office refit, we plan the levelling so it fits the programme.
