Grinding for unit refits along Kidlington's Langford Lane
Langford Lane on the north side of Kidlington is the town's main business area, with the Langford Locks industrial estate, the car showrooms of Oxford Motor Park and London Oxford Airport close by. When a unit there is refitted, the old floor can carry the history of its last use: painted walkways, worn coatings, tile adhesive, or a slab cast in bays with a lip at every joint.
Diamond grinding deals with that top layer. Heads fitted with diamond segments rotate against the concrete and shave it away a fraction at a time, so ridges, trowel marks and bay edges come down while paint, adhesive and thin coatings come off. The aim is a clean, open surface that the next product will bond to, whether that is a levelling compound, a bonded screed, new vinyl or a resin system laid by a specialist after us. We do not install resin or polished concrete, so a refit wanting those finishes uses us for the preparation only.
Showroom floors and workshops often need a screed after grinding, sometimes bonded or high strength, and that work sits with our commercial screeding team. A slab with cracks or broken edges is repaired before anything goes on top, which is covered under concrete floor repair.
Thick coatings over a large hangar or warehouse floor may be quicker to remove by shot blasting or scarifying. We will say so when a grinder would be the slower tool for the job.
Garages and extension slabs in Kidlington homes
Grinding is not only for business units. Detached houses make up 23% of Kidlington's homes, and garage conversions and rear or side extensions on the town's estates put a new floor next to an old concrete slab. Garage floors often carry oil stains, paint or a sealer that a screed or compound will not stick to, and a ground surface gives the new build-up a clean start. Where an extension slab and the original floor meet with a small lip, grinding the high side brings them together before the Kidlington latex screed or levelling coat goes over both.
There are two limits. Grinding removes local bumps; it does not fix a floor that falls across a room or sags in the middle, which needs levelling or a new screed once the high spots are off. And a screed can only lose so much: grind too deep and it ends up thinner than its minimum, so we check the depth before cutting.
Dust is controlled on every job. Concrete and screed contain silica, and grinding releases respirable crystalline silica dust, so we grind only with extraction attached and screen off neighbouring rooms. For lifting old floors and other groundwork, see our floor preparation service.
