Concrete Floor Grinding Contractors in Bicester

We grind concrete slabs and screeds in Bicester with diamond heads and on-tool dust extraction, taking off the high spots, ridges, laitance, old adhesive and paint that stop the next layer bonding or sitting flat. It is preparation carried out by our own crew, ahead of new flooring, a levelling compound, a screed or a resin coating applied by another firm. In Bicester the work falls into two groups: motorsport workshops and showrooms on the old airfield, and homes where an extension slab meets an older floor.

Workshop and showroom slabs at Bicester Heritage

Motorsport engineering teams now occupy the old RAF Bicester airfield, and their workshops and showrooms depend on level, durable floors. When one of those units changes hands or changes use, the slab underneath rarely arrives clean. Typical leftovers are painted lines, worn floor paint, glue from old vinyl or carpet tiles, and ridges where one concrete bay was finished slightly higher than its neighbour.

Grinding deals with all of these in the same visit. A machine with rotating diamond heads cuts the top of the slab away in thin layers. Coarse diamonds strip coatings and knock down lips; finer ones leave an even, open surface that a primer can soak into. The aim is a sound, clean face, not a shine, so this is not polished concrete.

What follows depends on the new occupier. A levelling compound for a showroom covering, a new wearing screed for a heavy workshop, or a resin system applied by a specialist firm all need the same start: no weak surface skin, no contamination and no sharp steps. We hand the floor over at that stage. Resin and polished finishes are outside our work, and we do not hire out grinders or sell diamond tooling.

Shops and restaurant units around Pioneer Square and at Bicester Village follow a similar pattern on refit, usually across smaller areas and with tighter opening dates. Where a coating is thick or the floor is very large, shot blasting as part of floor preparation can be quicker, and we say so when we price.

Dust, extension joins and garages around Bicester

Concrete, screed and old tiles all contain silica. Grinding them without extraction throws fine respirable crystalline silica into the air, which is harmful to breathe and drifts well beyond the room. We grind only with machines connected to an industrial extractor, seal doorways with sheeting and protect adjoining rooms, so a kitchen can be ground while the rest of the home stays in use.

At home, the usual reason to grind is a join. When an extension slab is cast against an older floor, the two rarely finish at exactly the same height, and a lip runs along the line of the old back wall. Grinding takes the proud edge down so the floors meet. With 49% of Bicester's homes built between 1973 and 1999, many floors lifted for a refit also carry years of adhesive. After grinding, latex over the cleaned surface gives thin flooring a smooth face.

Converted garages raise their own issues: oil marks, old paint and a dense trowelled skin that primers struggle to grip. A light grind opens that surface up.

One limit is worth knowing. Grinding cuts down local high spots; it cannot correct a floor that falls away or sags across the room, and taking too much off a screed can leave it thinner than it should be. In that case we grind the peaks, then pour compound to level a Bicester floor or lay a new screed.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Bicester: your questions

Can you grind old carpet glue off a Bicester concrete floor?

Yes. Carpet and vinyl adhesives, including the hard, dark residues left under older floors, are ground off with coarse diamonds until clean concrete or screed shows through. Thick or soft residue is sometimes scraped first so it does not clog the heads. Once the surface is clean it is ready for a primer and compound or a new covering, and extraction runs the whole time so the house stays usable.

Do you hire out floor grinders?

No. We are a screeding contractor, and grinding is work our own crew carries out as part of preparing a floor. We do not hire out grinders, extractors or diamond tooling, and we do not sell them. If you want a floor prepared and then levelled or screeded by one team, send us the area and a few photos. The same service is offered for concrete floor grinding in Oxford.

Will grinding make my Bicester floor level?

It will remove high spots, ridges and lips, but it will not fix a floor that falls or dips over a wide area. Taking a whole room down to its lowest point would remove far too much, and on a screed could leave it below its minimum depth. The usual answer is to grind the peaks and then level with compound or lay new screed. A straightedge check shows which.
