Concrete Floor Grinding in Brackley

In Brackley our team grinds concrete slabs and screeds with diamond heads and dust extraction, removing high spots, lips, laitance, glue and floor paint so the next layer goes onto clean, sound concrete. Two kinds of building create the need. Engineering premises, with motorsport at their heart, depend on flat, hard wearing floors, and the town's many 1970s to 1990s houses being extended need new slabs to meet old ones cleanly. The grinding is done by our own team, and we do not sell or hire out grinders.

Workshop and technical floors in Brackley

Engineering in Brackley is closely tied to motorsport. The Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team is based in the town, on a site that earlier housed Brawn GP, Honda and BAR, and Silverstone is close by. Buildings used for precision engineering rely on floors that are flat, hard and clean, and an existing slab often needs work before a new finish or a stronger topping goes on it.

Grinding is the usual first step. Diamond heads rotating on the slab remove a thin layer at each pass, taking with them old floor paint, line marking, worn sealers and the soft, dusty laitance that weakens a surface. Raised joints between pour bays and ridges left by earlier repairs are ground down at the same time.

On a floor that will carry machinery, trolleys or heavy benches, the clean slab can then take a bonded topping or a high strength screed for workshops. On an office fit-out, it may be primed and levelled before carpet tiles or vinyl. Where a resin coating is specified, we prepare the concrete and hand over to the resin installer, since we do not lay resin or polished concrete ourselves.

Grinding does not make a sloping floor flat. If a unit falls noticeably from one end to the other, we grind the high points and then level or screed, and the depth removed is checked so a screed is never ground below its minimum thickness.

New slab meets old in Brackley extensions

Brackley's big group of 1970s to 1990s detached houses is at the age for extensions, orangeries and garage conversions, and these often mean a new insulated floor butting against an existing concrete slab. However carefully the levels are set, the join is rarely perfect. A lip of a few millimetres at the old doorway is enough to show through LVT or crack a large tile.

Grinding takes that lip down cleanly. Once the high side is ground back, a skim of compound or a latex screed in Brackley blends the two floors into one surface.

Garage floors are a similar story. Before a converted garage gets its new build-up, or when a garage simply gets a fresh finish, oil, paint and old patching are ground off so primers and compounds can bond. Lifting old carpet or vinyl in the main house often leaves glue that has to go the same way.

Dust is handled with care in an occupied home. Concrete and screed contain silica, and grinding them creates fine dust that is harmful to breathe. Every grinder runs with extraction attached, doorways are sheeted and the rooms beyond are kept closed. For a project closer to Banbury, see concrete floor grinding in Banbury.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Brackley: your questions

What does concrete floor grinding remove?

High spots, ridges, trowel marks and the lips where pour bays meet, plus laitance, old adhesive, floor paint and thin coatings. It leaves clean, sound concrete ready for primer, compound, screed or new flooring. For thick coatings over a large Brackley unit, shot blasting through our floor preparation service may be quicker.

Can I hire a floor grinder from you for a Brackley job?

No. We are a contracting firm, so we do not sell or hire grinders or diamond tooling. Our own team carries out the grinding as part of preparing a floor, with dust extraction and floor protection included in the price. Once the slab is ground, we can level or screed it too, or leave it ready for your flooring fitter.

How much is taken off when a floor is ground?

Only as much as the job needs. Each pass removes a thin layer, so paint or adhesive may come off in one or two passes while a raised joint needs more. On a screed we measure the thickness first, because grinding too far can leave it below its minimum depth. At a Brackley extension join, the aim is to remove the lip and nothing more.
