Concrete Floor Grinding Contractors in Bletchley

Our own team grinds concrete and screed floors in Bletchley with diamond heads and dust extraction, taking down raised areas and stripping laitance, glue, paint and thin coatings so the next layer has a clean, sound surface to bond to. Mount Farm and Denbigh, Bletchley's industrial areas since London firms moved out after the war, hold older warehouse and factory floors that are typical candidates for grinding ahead of a repair, a new topping or new flooring.

Grinding older unit floors at Mount Farm and Denbigh

Mount Farm and Denbigh took in relocated London firms after the war, Marshall Amplification among them, and they are still Bletchley's industrial areas. A factory or warehouse floor of that age may have carried years of vehicles, racking and spills. Its surface may be painted with line markings, sealed, patched with mismatched materials or stained with oil, and none of that gives a new topping or adhesive a reliable bond.

Grinding opens it up again. The machine runs rotating diamond segments across the slab, taking the surface off in very thin passes. Paint, thin coatings, laitance and ridges come away, leaving bare, sound concrete that will accept a primer. Whether the plan is a new floor finish, a coating by a specialist or a new topping after concrete repair, grinding is the first step.

Shot blasting or scarifying can be quicker for thick coatings and very large areas, and both sit within our floor preparation work; once we have looked at the floor, we suggest whichever suits it.

Silica dust is why grinding is planned with care. Concrete and screed contain crystalline silica, and cutting them releases particles fine enough to reach deep into the lungs. Our grinders run only with extraction attached, and we screen off offices, stock and neighbouring bays before starting, so part of a unit may keep working while another part is ground. We are contractors rather than a hire shop, and we do not sell or rent grinding equipment.

Extensions and lifted floors in Bletchley homes

Grinding is not only for industrial units. Extensions and knock-throughs on the overspill-era houses and the 1970s to 1990s estates can leave a new slab finishing slightly above the old floor. That step catches the edge of a tile or shows through LVT; grinding takes the lip down so a thin compound can blend the two.

Lifting old flooring is the other usual reason. Pull up decades-old vinyl or carpet and the concrete beneath can be coated in black adhesive or patchy glue. A grinder clears it back to clean concrete so a latex screed for vinyl or LVT or a new adhesive can bond.

There is a limit to what grinding can fix. It removes local high spots and ridges, but a floor that slopes or has dropped across the room cannot be ground flat: far too much would have to be cut away, and a screed taken below its minimum depth loses strength. A tired concrete floor that has cracked or sunk needs relaying instead, which the Bletchley sand and cement screed page explains. Where only part of the floor sits high, we grind the peaks and level the rest.

Resin and polished concrete are outside our work. If either is your chosen finish, we can grind the slab and leave it ready for that specialist.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Bletchley: your questions

How much concrete does grinding remove?

Only as much as the job calls for, which is usually the surface layer carrying the paint, adhesive, laitance or high spot. Each pass takes off a very thin layer. On a screed we check its depth before grinding, because grinding too far can leave it thinner than its minimum and weaken the floor.

Can a ground concrete floor be left as the finished floor?

In a store or plant area, a cleaned and ground slab may serve on its own, but we do not polish or seal concrete as a decorative finish. Usually the ground surface is primed and then covered with compound, screed, adhesive and flooring, or a coating applied by another contractor.

Can you grind a unit floor at Mount Farm while the business is open?

Often, with planning. We screen off the area being ground, run extraction on every machine and keep dust and noise away from staff and stock as far as we can. A large unit can be done in sections, or outside working hours if the landlord allows. Tell us how the unit is used and we will set out a sequence.
