Concrete Floor Grinding Contractors in Buckingham

In Buckingham our own team diamond grinds concrete slabs and screeds to take down high spots, lips between bays and old trowel marks, and to strip laitance, adhesive, floor paint and thin coatings. Every machine runs with dust extraction. The surface left is clean and sound, ready for compound, screed, flooring or a resin system laid by others. Business premises are a natural fit here: industrial estates and technology parks whose floors need work whenever a layout changes.

Preparing unit floors on Tingewick Road Industrial Estate

Warehouses of over 53,000 sq ft stand on Tingewick Road Industrial Estate, and food, pharmaceutical, electronics and composite materials businesses occupy the town's other estates and technology parks. When a unit changes hands or a production line moves, the floor often has to change with it: old line paint, sealers and coatings come off, patch repairs leave high spots, and the new layout may call for a different finish.

Grinding is how that surface is reset. Diamond segments on a rotating head shave the top of the slab away a little at a time, cutting through paint, thin coatings, laitance and ridges until clean, sound concrete is exposed. That surface takes primer and compound well, and it gives a coating applied by a specialist something to grip.

Where the area is very large or the old coating is thick, shot blasting or scarifying may be the better tool, and both form part of our floor preparation service. Where bare concrete has spalled or broken away, it needs a repair to the concrete floor before anything goes over it.

Dust control matters on any occupied site. Concrete and screed contain silica, and grinding them releases respirable crystalline silica dust. We grind only with extraction connected, seal adjoining areas and bag the waste. If the unit is still running, tell us which areas must stay protected and we plan the sequence around them.

Extensions, garages and old flooring in Buckingham homes

Homes need grinding for smaller reasons. Where an extension slab has been cast against an older floor, the two rarely finish at exactly the same height, and a lip of a few millimetres is enough to crack a tile or show through LVT. Grinding takes the high side down, and a skim of compound blends in the rest.

Wherever a garage in Buckingham is being converted, the slab may carry oil stains, paint or a sealer that must come off before a membrane, screed or adhesive is laid. Our garage floor conversion guide sets out what follows.

Taking up old carpet or vinyl can expose glue that will not let anything new stick. Grinding removes it back to clean concrete, ready for a latex screed under new vinyl or for fresh adhesive.

Be clear on what grinding cannot do. It removes peaks, not slopes. If a floor falls or dips across a whole room, grinding it flat would mean cutting too deep, and a screed ground below its minimum depth is weakened. In that case we grind any high spots and then level or rescreed. We also stop at preparation: no resin, no polished concrete, and no grinders or tooling for sale or hire.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Buckingham: your questions

Will grinding make my floor level?

Only where the problem is local. Grinding takes down ridges, lips and high spots, but a floor that falls away or sags across a wide area stays that way after grinding. For that, we grind the high points and then lay a levelling compound or a new screed. Our Buckingham floor levelling page explains the options for a floor that is out across the room.

What happens to the dust from concrete grinding?

It is drawn off at the grinding head by an extraction unit, bagged and removed from site. Silica dust from concrete is harmful to breathe, so we never grind dry without extraction. Adjoining rooms and units are sealed off, and in occupied Buckingham premises we agree the working sequence with the occupier first.

Do you lay resin floors after grinding?

No. We grind and prepare the concrete, and if your chosen finish is a resin coating, a specialist installer lays it. We can time the grinding so the slab is ready shortly before they arrive. We do not produce polished concrete floors either. If the floor needs compound, latex or a new screed instead, those we lay ourselves.
