Refit floors in converted factories and on Moulton Park
Most of the case for levelling compound in Northampton is made by commercial refits. When an office in a converted shoe factory is refitted, or a unit on the industrial estates at Moulton Park and Round Spinney changes tenant, the old finish comes up and the base underneath is exposed. Old adhesive, patched trenches, paint and worn areas all show through LVT or sheet vinyl, even where carpet tiles hid them for years.
BS 8204 checks flatness by placing a 2m straightedge across the floor. The largest gap beneath it may be 3mm for SR1, 5mm for SR2 and 10mm for SR3. Thin sheet products often want SR1, so the flooring specification tells us which class to aim for.
Preparation decides whether compound stays bonded. Anything contaminated or crumbly on top is stripped back, and the primer is chosen for what lies beneath, be it concrete, sand and cement or calcium sulphate. Compound is then laid from about 2mm up to around 10mm, with fast drying products chosen to keep the refit on programme and larger floors phased zone by zone, so part of the building can stay open while the work goes on.
Warehouses and factories on the town's estates also regularly need heavier work: heavy duty screeds, repairs and floor grinding. Those are separate services. A worn or contaminated slab may need concrete floor grinding before anything else, and a floor that takes heavy traffic is a job for commercial screeding rather than a skim of compound.
Uneven floors and extension joins in Northampton homes
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 are 21% of Northampton's stock, and floors of that age have had decades to settle, be patched after leaks or pick up layers of old tiles and adhesive. In houses, the usual case for levelling is a step or slope where a new extension meets the original floor, or a room where the old surface is too uneven for a thin modern finish.
A skim of self levelling compound takes out small dips and feathers the join, so a continuous floor runs through the doorway without a ridge.
Compound has limits. It gives a smooth top but adds no strength. Pour it thick over a floor that is due for rescreeding and it tends to crack and come away. A base that sounds hollow, is falling apart or sits too far out of level needs repairs to the screed itself or a new one.
We level floors in homes and premises across the town, including Abington Vale, King's Heath, Blacky More, Kingsthorpe Hollow, Eastfield, Merefield and Shelfleys. This service does not cover wood floor sanding or DIY levelling products.
