Joins, garages and lifted carpets in Selsey homes
A new extension rarely finishes perfectly flush with the original house. The slab or screed in the new room may sit a few millimetres proud at the doorway, or the builder's float may have left ridges near the walls. Laid over that, LVT shows a raised line and tiles rock. Grinding takes those high points down so the two floors meet.
Lifted floor coverings tell a similar story. When old carpet or vinyl comes up in a post-war Selsey bungalow, there is often a crust of black adhesive, gripper nail holes and patches of paint beneath. Diamond grinding cuts through that layer in thin passes and exposes clean concrete that a primer and compound can bond to.
Garages being turned into rooms are the third case. Their floors may carry years of floor paint, oil stains and a dusty, weak top. Grinding removes the paint and the poor surface before the new build-up goes on, and our garage conversion floor guide covers what follows.
Any calcium sulphate screed needs attention too. Its laitance must come off before flooring, and on larger areas a grinder fitted with the right head does that efficiently.
Grinding is the preparation, not the finished floor. Once the surface is clean, the next layer might be smoothing compound for a level finish, a bonded screed, or the flooring itself. Resin and polished concrete are outside our work, although a ground slab is exactly what a resin installer will want to start from.
Dust, slopes and limits on the Manhood Peninsula
Concrete, screed and tile all contain silica. Grind them without control and the fine dust that rises is respirable crystalline silica, which is harmful to breathe. We only grind with extraction connected at the head, and we seal doorways and cover fittings in the rooms next door. In a lived-in Selsey home, that means the rest of the house stays usable while the work goes on.
What grinding cannot do is change the overall shape of a floor. A slab that falls away towards one corner, or dips across the middle of a room, will still fall or dip once the high spots are cut. Cutting deeper to chase a level can leave the screed too thin to do its job. The usual answer is to grind the high points, then build up the low areas with compound or a new screed.
On big areas, or where thick coatings have to come off, shot blasting or scarifying can be quicker, and both come under our floor preparation services. We are contractors who bring and run our own equipment; grinders and diamond tooling are not something we sell or hire out.
