Grinding joins after Emsworth extensions and knock-throughs
When a rear extension is built, its slab and screed are poured to meet the existing floor. Even with care, the join can finish a few millimetres high, and the old floor beside it may have a lip or a patched trench where a wall or door frame once stood. A knock-through adds another strip where the wall footing used to be.
Diamond grinding deals with the raised parts. Heads set with diamond segments spin across the surface and cut it down a thin layer at a time, so a ridge or a high patch can be brought level with the floor around it. The same tool strips laitance from a fresh screed, removes paint and thin coatings, and lifts the hard crust of old adhesive left when carpet or vinyl comes up.
What it cannot do is fill a hollow. If the extension floor sits below the house floor, or the old floor sags across the room, grinding the high side would take too much off. The right answer is to grind any high spots, then build the low side up with compound or screed. Too much grinding on a screed also risks leaving it below its minimum depth, so we keep cuts to what the job needs.
Once ground, the floor is ready for a primer and the next layer, whether that is a latex screed for vinyl or LVT, a levelling compound or new tiles.
Dust control in occupied homes from Lumley to New Brighton
Most grinding in a house happens while people still live there, and in a bungalow every room is on the same floor as the work. That puts dust control at the centre of the job. Cutting into concrete, screed or tiles frees the silica in them as a respirable crystalline dust, which can harm the lungs. We grind only with extraction connected to the machine, and we sheet doorways, cover kitchen units and protect any rooms next to the work area.
A garage being turned into living space is another case for the machine. Its floor may carry paint or a worn coating that has to go before insulation, screed or a new finish can follow.
We are a contractor, so we bring our own grinders and dust extraction; the machines and diamond heads are not for sale or hire. Resin and polished concrete finishes are left to specialists. Where a slab is cracked or broken rather than just rough, concrete floor repair comes first. For a nearby town, see concrete floor grinding in Fareham.
