Latex screed in Emsworth bungalow kitchens and bathrooms
Latex screed is the name the flooring trade gives to a levelling compound mixed from two parts. One is a cement based powder; the other is a latex liquid that is used in place of water. Together they cure into a thin, tough layer with a little give in it, which is why it holds onto surfaces such as plywood and glazed tile better than a standard compound.
A refit tends to expose a patchwork. When old kitchen units come out, the floor beneath can be tiles where the room was open, bare concrete where cabinets stood and filled chases where pipes were moved. Sheet vinyl or LVT laid straight over that would show every edge. A latex coat, a few millimetres deep, joins it all into one smooth face.
The bases it suits are firmly bonded ceramic or quarry tiles, uneven but sound concrete, flooring grade plywood screwed over timber boards, and old adhesive that is thin, hard and well stuck. The finishes that need it are the thin, flexible ones: sheet vinyl, LVT, lino, rubber, safety flooring in a shower room, and carpet where a smooth subfloor matters.
Homes from 2000 to 2014 are 9% of the town. If lifting a carpet in one of them reveals a calcium sulphate screed, its weak surface skin is sanded away and a compatible primer applied before latex. For the wider picture on uneven floors, see our Emsworth floor levelling service.
Damp, boards and older Emsworth Conservation Area houses
Many older Emsworth houses, in the conservation area and along Queen Street and Victoria Road, went up with no damp proof membrane at all. That matters here, because latex cannot cure damp. A thin compound over a solid floor that draws moisture will lose its bond, and the vinyl on top will lift. We take readings before quoting, and where the floor is damp, latex is the wrong product.
The fix in that case is a new floor built up in layers, with a membrane linked to the walls, insulation where there is depth and a new screed, described on our page for relaying older Emsworth floors.
Timber floors have their own rule. Latex never goes on bare boards, because they flex and the layer cracks. Boards are screwed down and overboarded with flooring grade plywood, and the latex goes over that. If the boards stay springy or the joists are weak, they are put right first.
A floor that is cracked or broken in places needs screed repairs before any skim. For the same work nearby, see latex screed in Horndean.
