Liquid screed for whole ground floors in Emsworth
A bungalow is all ground floor. When its old floor is taken out to add insulation and underfloor heating, every room is being rebuilt at once, and the new floor has to finish level from front door to back. A pumped liquid screed does that in one pour, with no hand compaction and far fewer joints than sand and cement.
Flatness is a real gain. It readily reaches SR1 or SR2 flatness, which matters when LVT, engineered wood or large format tiles are going down straight on top. On a knock-through, where two rooms become one, a single pour also avoids a visible line where old and new floors meet.
Depth is lower than a traditional screed. Laid floating over insulation in an Emsworth bungalow, the screed itself can be about 35mm. Over heating pipes it needs at least 25mm of cover, so the total is usually 45 to 50mm. The heating side of that job, including when the system can be switched on, is covered on our Emsworth underfloor heating screed page.
Where a bungalow floor will stay dry, the mix is usually calcium sulphate, which is also common over heating; a cement based liquid screed is the one for areas that may get wet. If you are torn between pumped and hand-laid for a bungalow floor, our comparison of the two screed types sets them side by side. Newer homes are a smaller part of the town: 15% were built since 2000.
Getting a screed pump to Emsworth homes
Our mixer and pump stay outside on the street or drive, and a hose carries the screed indoors. On a bungalow or detached house with a drive or side path, the run is usually short and simple. In the old town, with its medieval pattern of streets and alleyways, the vehicles may have to stand further away, so the hose route is planned carefully and the floors it crosses are protected.
Flats are less common here, at 12% of homes, but where one is being refitted the hose goes up a stairwell or through a window, and the floor is sealed so nothing escapes below.
Before the pour, the room is prepared: edge strip round every wall, membrane or insulation taped at the joins, and thresholds set to the finished height. After it, the floor can take light foot traffic within 24 to 48 hours, but drying goes on for weeks, with the first 40mm drying at roughly 1mm per day.
On published 2026 UK prices, budget £24 to £31 a square metre for a pumped floor. Our screed pumping service explains the equipment. For work just to the west, see liquid screed in Havant.
