Where pumped liquid screed fits in Chichester homes
Liquid screed leaves the mixer as a fluid, travels through a hose into the room and finds its own level. That makes it quick on a large area. In a day the pump can fill an entire knocked-through ground floor, a long rear extension or an apartment, leaving far fewer joints than hand-laid work, and the screed barely shrinks as it sets.
On a new build plot or a modern extension, the floor is often set up for the method from the start: rigid insulation, a membrane and an edge strip are in place and waiting for the pour. Extensions to established homes in Summersdale, Whyke or Stockbridge can suit it as well, provided the new floor is set to finish level with the existing one.
Depth is lower than with traditional screed. For a house the floating layer can go down to roughly 35mm, while a commercial floor wants about 40mm. Where heating pipes run underneath, they need 25mm of screed over them at least, so most heated floors end up 45 to 50mm deep. Getting SR1 or SR2 is realistic with this material; SR1 is the tighter of the two, with a 2m straightedge showing no gap above 3mm.
Some liquid screeds are calcium sulphate and some are cement based; which one goes down depends on the room and what will cover it. Drawings that call for a CA grade point to our anhydrite flow screed page for Chichester. To weigh the two methods up, read liquid versus traditional screed.
Getting the pump to the room in Chichester
A pumped pour depends on where the mixer and pump can stand. A driveway or a site compound makes it simple. Where a home has no driveway, including in the walled centre, where the vehicles go needs agreeing before the day. The hose can run along a hallway, through a side passage or up a stairwell, so a first floor flat does not rule liquid screed out, but long or high runs need to be known when we price.
Speed is why many builders choose it. Most pours can be walked on inside 24 to 48 hours, and the joiner and decorator get their rooms back soon after. Flooring has to wait longer: count roughly one drying day for every millimetre through the first 40mm, and more per millimetre past that. So a heated floor 50mm deep is weeks away from taking a moisture sensitive finish, unless the heating helps it along. Our guide to screed drying, stage by stage has the detail.
On price, 2026 rates for liquid screed run from £24 up to £31 per m², with pump hire at £300 to £600 a day when it is charged separately. Our pump is never hired out on its own; it only ever comes with our own crew, included in the job.
