Pumping from the road on Southsea's terraced streets
Southsea, Fratton and North End have long Victorian terraces, and on a terraced street with no side access, pumping is the practical way in. The mixer lorry parks on the street, the pump feeds a hose through the front door, down the hall and into the back room or extension. The route is protected with sheeting, and a hose can run a long way through the house.
What we need from you is the street's parking situation. Residents' permit zones, yellow lines and narrow gaps between parked cars all affect where the lorry can stand. Tell us early and we can plan the day, including whether a suspension of parking is sensible.
Inside, the room needs readying first, with compressible strip round the walls, taped sheeting over the insulation and a barrier across each doorway. Liquid screed is fluid, so any gap lets it escape into the next room or under a skirting.
Once poured, it levels itself. That makes SR1 or SR2 well within reach, and because it barely shrinks, a long Fratton kitchen diner can go down with hardly any joints. It is also slimmer: floated in a house it starts at roughly 35mm, where the hand-laid alternative sits around 65mm.
Our pump is operated by our own team; we do not hire pumps or machines out. There is more on the kit itself under screed pumping, and if you are still choosing between methods, liquid screed against sand and cement weighs them up.
Liquid screed in Portsmouth flats and newer homes
With so many flats in the city, many floors are above ground level. A hose runs up a stairwell far more easily than bags of sand and cement can be carried, and the pour is finished in one visit. For upper floors we need to know the level, the route, and any rules from the managing agent about working hours and lifts.
Newer homes are designed with liquid screed in mind. Only 11% of Portsmouth's homes were built since 2000, but those homes usually have insulated ground floors meant for a flowing screed. On a new plot, the insulation and any heating pipes are often already down when the pump arrives.
Pumped screeds split broadly into calcium sulphate mixes and cement mixes. For the calcium sulphate grades, and the sanding and testing they need before flooring, go to anhydrite flow screed in Portsmouth.
Being able to stand on it is one thing; being dry enough for vinyl or wood is another. Budget a day for each millimetre up to 40mm deep, then book the fitter only when a moisture reading allows it. Screed drying times are explained in more depth in our guide.
