Liquid Screed in Horndean

Liquid screed goes into Horndean houses by hose from a mixer outside, so the knocked-through kitchen, the new extension, even the entire downstairs, gets done in one visit, with light footfall possible 24 to 48 hours afterwards. Many of Horndean's houses went up in the late 20th century: 34% of its homes date from 1973 to 1999, and those, along with the 1960s houses before them, are the detached homes that are most often extended.

Liquid screed for Horndean's extended detached houses

Opening up a house is where a pumped floor pays off. Across the Hazleton estate and the 1960s and 1970s housing around it, detached homes are gaining extensions, and when the new room joins the old kitchen to make one space, the floor runs wall to wall with nothing breaking it up. Liquid screed spreads over that whole area, finds its level and easily meets SR1 or SR2, meaning a 2m straightedge shows a gap of no more than 3mm or 5mm.

It barely shrinks, so the joint lines a traditional sand and cement floor would need mostly disappear. That counts when big tiles or a single run of LVT will cross from the old kitchen into the new room.

It is also thinner. Laid floating over insulation in a house, a pumped floor can go down at roughly 35mm; the sand and cement equivalent is around 65mm. Where the extension floor has to meet the existing one at the doorway, those spare millimetres can be given to thicker insulation.

Pumped screeds split into a gypsum-type, calcium sulphate binder and a cement binder. Each flows and finds its own level, but they dry differently, need different surface preparation and suit different rooms. The calcium sulphate side is covered on our anhydrite flow screed page for Horndean, and our guide comparing poured and hand-laid screeds sets the two methods side by side.

Getting the pump to rooms in Horndean and Lovedean

Only the hose comes inside. The mixer and pump sit outdoors and the screed travels through the nearest door to the room being poured. A detached house with a drive gives the pump a place to stand without blocking the street. If the road is the only option, or the room is at the back with a tight side passage, mention it with your enquiry and we will work out the hose route in advance.

Upstairs is no harder. Purpose-built flats make up just 11% of Horndean's homes, but for any flat or first floor room the hose simply goes up the stairs, far easier than hauling sand and cement up in buckets.

A good pour depends on what happens first. Edge strip lines every wall, a membrane goes over the insulation with taped joints, and each doorway is dammed off. We go round all of it before pumping starts, and if the builder has not provided the build-up, our insulation and membrane supply can.

Don't mistake footfall for dryness, though. Most floor finishes have to wait until a test shows moisture under the manufacturer's limit, and drying takes roughly one day for each millimetre up to 40mm, slowing after that. Why a deep Horndean floor keeps you waiting longer is set out in how long a screed takes to dry.

FAQs

Liquid Screed in Horndean: your questions

Can liquid screed go over the old concrete floor in a Horndean house?

It can, in some cases. If the slab is sound and level, a screed can go over it on a membrane, as long as there is depth to spare. Where the old floor is cracked, damp or has no insulation, it is normally better to dig it out, rebuild with insulation and pour a floating liquid screed from around 35mm. We check the base first and then recommend one route, because picking wrong leads to cracks later.

How long does liquid screed take to dry before flooring?

Count about one day per millimetre of depth for the first 40mm; beyond that the rate drops off. So a 40mm floor in a Horndean extension could need about six weeks in reasonable weather before it passes a moisture test, and more in a cold, wet winter. The easiest way to cut that wait is to pour no deeper than the floor really needs.

Is liquid screed worth it for one small room in Horndean?

Usually not. Pumping costs more for each square metre: the 2026 published range is £24 to £31 a square metre, where hand-laid sand and cement is £18 to £25. On top sits pump hire, published at £300 to £600 a day, and that costs the same for a cloakroom as for a kitchen. A lone utility room or cloakroom is normally better done by hand in sand and cement. A large open extension is where the speed and thinner depth of liquid screed earn their cost.
