Screeding in Horndean

From Lovedean down to the A3(M) bridge and out to the surrounding villages, we pour liquid and anhydrite floors, hand-lay sand and cement, cover underfloor heating pipes and level old floors for new finishes. Most Horndean houses are post-war: 40% went up between 1945 and 1972, so the floor in question is usually an original slab that someone wants to build off, dig out or heat. Horndean is about 45.9 miles south-south-west of our Slough base as the crow flies, and the price is fixed on paper before work begins.

Which screed fits which kind of Horndean home

Close to half of Horndean's homes, 44%, are detached, and most of the floor work follows from that. Houses on the Hazleton estate and in the other 1960s and 1970s streets get extended, lose their garages to new rooms and have cold, uninsulated ground floors dug out and rebuilt.

Knocking a kitchen through into a new rear extension leaves one big open floor, and pumped liquid screed for a Horndean extension is normally the fastest way to get it flat. Poured in, it levels itself wall to wall, and the family can tread on it again 24 to 48 hours later.

Rebuilding a worn-out ground floor, or lifting a garage to house level, is different work. Small rooms, steps in level and anything that will get wet are easier with hand-laid sand and cement.

Plenty of those new floors get heating pipes too. Our page on covering underfloor heating pipes sets out how much screed goes over them and when the heating can first be run.

The old Gales Brewery is its own case. The buildings now hold shops and flats, so a floor there sits between two households and noise travelling through it has to be thought about. Getting it smooth is often a job for a levelling compound under the new flooring and not a fresh screed.

Some Horndean extension plans name a calcium sulphate grade; if yours does, our anhydrite page explains that particular material and the testing it goes through.

Timing a pour around a Horndean build

Screed lands halfway through a build, so book it that way. Get the windows and outside doors fitted first so the room is weathertight, finish any wet plaster, and have the heating engineer pressure test the pipes they laid. Once poured, the floor needs drying time before tiles, LVT or timber, and how long depends on which screed it is and how deep. Fix the screed date first and let the flooring fitter fall in behind it.

Then think about getting to the room. Pumped screed means a mixer and pump outside, close enough for the hose to reach a door. Most detached Horndean houses have a drive, which solves it. If yours faces a busy road or has nowhere to park off the street, mention the restrictions and any side access in your enquiry, and the morning will run to plan.

Not all of Horndean is houses. Being close to the A3(M) brought light industry to three main estates, with Hazleton Interchange, built in the early 1990s, the most recent. A change of tenant on one of those units can mean concrete repairs, grinding or a new topping, which our screeding for commercial units takes care of.

FAQs

Screeding in Horndean: your questions

Who lays floor screed in Horndean and Lovedean?

K & B Screeding does, working from our Slough base across Horndean, Lovedean and the neighbouring villages of Cowplain, Catherington, Clanfield and Rowlands Castle. Postcodes here include PO8. We pour liquid and anhydrite floors, lay sand and cement and underfloor heating screeds, and level floors that are already down. Tell us roughly how many square metres, which rooms, and what the floor is made of now, and you will have our price, fixed and in writing, inside 24 hours.

How much does it cost to screed a floor in Horndean?

The UK figures published for 2026 are £18 to £25 per m² for sand and cement laid by hand, rising to £24 to £31 per m² once the screed is pumped as a liquid. Where a Horndean floor lands in those bands depends on its size and depth, whether the pump can get close, and whether insulation and membranes are included. We agree the figure on paper before starting, and it stays put after the floor is laid.

Should a Horndean extension be screeded before or after plastering?

In most cases, after the wet plaster. Plastering fills the room with moisture and mess, and a new floor is safer once it is over. The extension also needs to be weathertight. Heated floors add one more condition: every pipe laid and pressure tested by the engineer first. Give us the sequence of trades on your job and we will slot the screed in where it belongs.
