Which screed suits which Gosport home
Census 2021 counted 70,120 people living in the Gosport built-up area, and 38% of their homes are terraced. For a screeder, that number tells you what to expect on the peninsula. A terrace built between the wars or earlier was often built with its ground floor laid straight on the earth, no membrane between the two. Once that floor comes out, it goes back as insulation, a membrane and fresh screed, and for the narrow rooms and back additions in these houses we would normally lay traditional sand and cement by hand.
The 1945 to 1972 semis bring a different job. Plenty of them are ready to be extended at the back, and the new room has to come out level with the old kitchen floor. For a wide back room on one of these semis, pumped liquid screed around Gosport makes sense: it levels itself across the room and takes feet again 24 to 48 hours after the pour. Planning pipes in the new room? Our underfloor heating screed notes cover how much screed goes over them and how to bring the heat up.
Most of Gosport's new building sits in a few places rather than across the whole town. At Rowner, the Rowner Renewal scheme has swapped much of the 1960s estate for new homes and a 10-storey block, and new apartment floors like those are often specified in calcium sulphate, which our Gosport anhydrite page explains. Royal Haslar is different again: converting historic naval buildings means laying new floors inside old walls, so we check levels, thresholds and the structure before picking a screed.
Alverstoke, Elson or in between, we start with three questions. What is the existing floor made of? What finish goes on top? When do you need the room back?

Access, parking and timing a pour in Gosport
Before anything else, we work out how the screed gets to the room. Plenty of Gosport terraces open straight onto the pavement with no front garden, so a pump hose may have to come in from the road and through the house. We plan that route, cover the hallway floor and agree a spot for the mixer or pump lorry. If the kerb is crowded, starting early or sorting parking ahead of time helps, and a word with the neighbours beforehand does no harm. Sand and cement gets mixed near the room, which takes less road space but means more trips with the barrow through your house.
Getting the timing right counts just as much. Screed belongs after the walls, roof and windows and before final plaster and flooring. Go in too soon and rain can reach the floor; leave it late and the kitchen fitter is standing around. Lay sand and cement 65mm thick in a Gosport kitchen extension and the fitter may be weeks behind, because the first 40mm alone needs around 40 days and the remainder dries slower still. Put that drying period into the build programme when you book us.
Some floors are solid and only uneven, and then levelling ahead of new flooring may be enough. Commercial units such as those at Daedalus, home to marine related firms, get planned the same way, with trading hours worked in.
