Southampton's homes and the screed each one needs
Census 2021 counted 249,633 people in the Southampton built-up area, and 41% of the city's homes are flats. Alongside them run older terraced streets, and the two need very different floors, laid in very different ways.
The older terraces in Shirley, Freemantle and Bevois Valley often have suspended timber ground floors. When the kitchen is extended at the back, those floors are usually replaced with a solid, screeded slab so the old rooms and the new one sit on the same base. That work suits sand and cement for timber floor replacements, which is laid by hand and copes with narrow rooms and awkward thresholds.
Flats need a different approach. The screed has to reach an upper floor, go down quickly and cause as little disruption to the building as possible, which is where pumped liquid screed for flats and extensions comes in. If a heated floor is planned, our heated floor screed page for Southampton covers pipe cover and the warm-up schedule.
The student neighbourhoods of Portswood and Highfield bring their own deadline, set by the letting calendar rather than the builder. Work in lets there is squeezed between tenancies, and a quick drying screed can bring the floor back into use sooner. If the drawings for a block or a new plot name a calcium sulphate grade, the anhydrite page goes through how that screed is poured and then tested.

Parking, programme and pour day in Southampton
A pour goes smoothly when the work before it is finished. Before pour day the room must be weathertight and the wet plaster done, and if there is heating, your installer has to lay and pressure test the pipes, as that part is not ours. Book the screed early, then confirm the date once those trades are done, so the drying time is not squeezed when the flooring fitter is waiting.
On the day itself, the mixer and pump have to be parked where the hose can stretch into the room. On a terraced street that can mean an early start to get a space, and in a block of flats the managing agent usually needs to approve the route, the parking and any protection for shared hallways. Tell us about both when you ask for a price.
We cover the whole city, from Bitterne, Northam and Weston to Thornhill, Townhill Park and the marina at Ocean Village. Postcodes here include SO14, SO15, SO16, SO17, SO18 and SO19.
Plenty of Southampton floors can stay where they are. If yours is sound and only uneven, levelling compound poured over it is often all it takes. Commercial floors are different again: at Adanac Park beside junction 1 of the M271 and on Nursling Industrial Estate, new and refurbished units call for hard-wearing screeds and properly prepared floors.
