Liquid Screed in Southampton

We pump liquid screed into Southampton flats, extensions and open-plan ground floors. The fact that shapes this service in the city is height: so much of Southampton's housing is flats that the screed often has to travel up a stairwell or through a window rather than across a garden. Only 16% of homes date from 2000 or later, so many of those floors are in older blocks where access has to be planned with the building's managing agent.

Pumping liquid screed into Southampton flats

Since it is pumped from the mixer and levels itself, a whole Southampton flat can be poured in one visit, which counts for a lot when the stairs and the parking are shared. We run the hose along the agreed route, protect shared areas and keep the mixer and pump in the space the building allows.

In a flat, floor height is precious. In a home, floating liquid screed begins at around 35mm (about 40mm for commercial floors), so it sits thinner than hand-laid sand and cement. That leaves more room for insulation and acoustic layers under the screed and keeps door heights workable.

Flatness is the next reason to choose it. It will readily hit SR1 or SR2, so engineered wood, LVT and big format tiles go down with little further levelling. It barely shrinks, so a big living room needs much less jointing than a hand-laid floor.

Walk on it after 24 to 48 hours as a rule; the flooring itself waits until the screed has dried. Both binders are on offer, calcium sulphate and cement, and we pick between them for the flat in question. If your specification names a particular calcium sulphate grade, our anhydrite flow screed page for Southampton deals with that material in detail. For how the pumping side works, see our screed pumping service. Pumps and machines stay with our crews; none are hired out.

Liquid floors for extensions behind Shirley and Freemantle terraces

The older terraces in Shirley, Freemantle and Bevois Valley are often extended at the back, and the kitchen extension is where a liquid floor makes most sense. Once the old suspended timber floor has been replaced with a solid base, the insulation goes down, and a single pour can run through the new room and the old one so the whole ground floor sits at one level.

Access is the challenge on these streets. On a street of terraces, the mixer and pump normally sit out on the road at the front while the hose goes through the house to the back. We protect the hallway and doorways on the way and keep the pour short so the street is clear again quickly.

With a new open-plan kitchen, a flat floor pays off twice: large tiles lie flat, and kitchen units need less packing. Drying still needs planning. As a rough rule, the first 40mm takes about a day per mm and anything deeper longer, so look at our screed drying times guide before you book the fitter. The same service covers homes in Totton.

FAQs

Liquid Screed in Southampton: your questions

Can liquid screed be pumped to a second floor flat in Southampton?

Yes. From wherever the pump can park, the hose climbs the stairs or comes in at a window. We agree the hose route, parking and protection of shared areas with the managing agent before the day. The main limit is the length of the hose run from where the pump can stand.

How flat will a liquid screed be for large tiles?

You can expect SR1 or SR2 without difficulty, meaning gaps no bigger than 3mm or 5mm under a 2m straightedge. That is usually flat enough for large format tiles and LVT without a full skim of compound, though laitance still has to be removed from calcium sulphate types before tiling.

What does liquid screed cost per m² in Southampton?

Liquid is listed at £24 to £31 a square metre in the published 2026 UK figures. Over underfloor heating the published range is £20 to £35 per m². Upper floors, long hose runs and small areas can push the price up. Send over the square metres, how high up the flat sits and where the pump could go, and within 24 hours our fixed price lands with you in writing.
